This Patient with L3-L4 & L4-L5 Pinched Nerves Could Move to Another Bed by Himself Just Hours After Surgery with dr. Christian Permana at Mandaya Puri

Pasien Saraf Kejepit L3-L4 & L4-L5 Ini Langsung Bisa Pindah Tempat Tidur Sendiri Beberapa Jam Pascaoperasi dengan dr. Christian Permana di RS Mandaya Puri

A pinched nerve occurs when a nerve is subjected to excessive pressure from surrounding tissues, such as bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons. This pressure can cause various symptoms, including pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness.

A pinched nerve can occur in different parts of the body. One area where it commonly occurs is the lower spine or lower back. Conditions such as a herniated disc can compress a nerve root and cause pain that radiates to the buttocks and legs, along with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower limbs.

These symptoms were also experienced by a 61-year-old patient from Maluku who had a pinched nerve at the L3-L4 and L4-L5 levels of the spine. After undergoing surgery with dr. Christian Permana, Sp.BS, FTB, FINSS, FICS, a neurosurgeon at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, the patient was able to move to another bed by himself just a few hours after surgery. Interestingly, the numbness he had previously experienced also began to improve following the procedure.

“After I woke up, perhaps because I was still under the effects of the anesthesia, I felt much better. I did not experience excessive pain or inflammation, and I did not have a fever. The surgery finished at around 2 p.m., and by 6 p.m., I was already able to move to another bed by myself. The next morning, I was already able to sit up. I was surprised by the change. It was really good. Thank God, after the procedure, I felt much better. The numbness had started to decrease,” the patient said.

“At First, I Only Felt Back Pain. I Never Expected It to Become This Serious.”

The symptoms experienced by Yakobus began around 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he spent more time exercising at home, including weightlifting without the supervision of an instructor.

At first, the only symptom he experienced was soreness in his lower back. However, by 2021, the condition had gradually developed into numbness and cramps in his legs.

The symptoms became increasingly noticeable when he walked. His steps became stiff, and his legs often felt numb and tingly. At times, the sensation in his feet was so reduced that he would not notice when his sandal slipped off.

The symptoms also became more noticeable when sitting for long periods or driving. The pain in his lower back made it difficult for him to walk for extended periods and gradually began to interfere with his daily activities.

As his symptoms became increasingly disruptive, Yakobus tried various treatments. These included reflexology and alternative treatments in several cities, including Semarang and Yogyakarta.

He also underwent therapy at a hospital in Pontianak. However, these efforts did not result in significant improvement.

After living with the condition for several years, Yakobus began looking for other treatment options. During his search, he learned about Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital and began researching the doctors and medical technologies available for treating pinched nerves.

Meeting dr. Christian Permana at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

During his search for treatment, Yakobus found information about dr. Christian Permana, a neurosurgeon at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital.

He also watched videos explaining pinched nerve conditions and their treatment by dr. Christian. After watching the explanation, Yakobus felt that the condition described was similar to what he had been experiencing.

Before coming to Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, Yakobus had already undergone an MRI examination. He then sent the MRI images to dr. Christian for an initial assessment.

The MRI showed abnormalities in the lumbar spine, particularly at the L3-L4 and L4-L5 levels.

Yakobus subsequently decided to undergo a further consultation and scheduled a procedure at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital. In addition to the doctor’s explanation, he also considered the technology and medical equipment available for treating pinched nerves.

dr. Christian Permana Explains the Patient’s Condition and Surgical Procedure

Based on the examination, the patient was found to have pinched nerves at two levels, namely L3-L4 and L4-L5.

This condition explained the symptoms Yakobus had been experiencing, including numbness, tingling, leg cramps, and difficulty walking.

The symptoms had persisted since 2021 and had gradually become more severe. Therefore, after a thorough examination and evaluation of his condition, surgery was recommended.

In Yakobus’ case, the procedure was performed using a uniportal endoscopic technique. This technique allows the surgeon to access the affected area through a smaller incision compared with conventional spine surgery.

Because the patient had nerve compression at two different levels, the procedure was performed at both affected areas. Each access point involved a small incision measuring approximately 8 mm to 1 cm.

Spinal endoscopic surgery uses a small camera to help the surgeon visualize the affected area and perform the procedure through a minimally invasive approach.

The surgery went well and smoothly. After the procedure, the patient was monitored to assess his symptoms and mobility.

The Patient’s Condition After Surgery

One of the things that surprised Yakobus was the improvement he experienced after surgery.

After waking up from anesthesia, he felt significantly better. He did not experience excessive pain or discomfort and did not develop a fever.

The surgery was completed at around 2 p.m. Just a few hours later, at approximately 6 p.m., Yakobus was already able to move to another bed by himself. The following morning, he was also able to sit up.

The improvement surprised him because he had been experiencing problems with his legs and lower back for several years.

The numbness that had previously been quite bothersome also began to decrease after the procedure. This was a positive development during his recovery. One day after surgery, the patient was also allowed to return home.
