An interventional radiologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating various medical conditions using minimally invasive procedures. These procedures involve small incisions or the insertion of specialized instruments through blood vessels or other parts of the body. During the procedure, the doctor uses instruments such as catheters and specialized wires to reach the area requiring treatment.
To guide these instruments to the correct location, the doctor uses medical imaging technologies, such as X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasound. Compared with conventional surgery, some interventional radiology procedures can be performed through smaller incisions, potentially reducing tissue trauma and speeding up recovery. In certain cases, this approach may also reduce the need for hospitalization.

Types of Procedures Performed by an Interventional Radiologist
Interventional radiologists perform various procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions using medical imaging guidance. Common procedures include:
- Angiography: An examination of blood vessels to detect narrowing, blockages, or other abnormalities.
- Angioplasty and stent placement: Opening narrowed or blocked blood vessels using a specialized balloon or a small mesh tube called a stent.
- Embolization: Blocking specific blood vessels to help stop bleeding or treat certain medical conditions.
- Gastrostomy tube placement: Inserting a tube directly into the stomach to provide nutrition for patients who cannot eat by mouth.
- Image-guided biopsy: Collecting a tissue sample using a needle to help diagnose diseases, including cancer.
- Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement: Inserting a filter into a large blood vessel to help prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs in selected patients.
- Thrombolytic therapy: Administering medication to dissolve blood clots that obstruct blood flow.
- Catheter placement: Inserting a specialized tube for chemotherapy, nutritional support, or hemodialysis.
- Interventional cancer therapy: Delivering anticancer medication directly to a tumor through its blood vessels in certain cases.
- Foreign body removal from blood vessels: Using a catheter or specialized instrument to remove a foreign object lodged inside a blood vessel.
Recommended Interventional Radiologist in Jakarta and Tangerang

Dr. Sugianto Santoso, Sp.Rad (K)RI, is a radiologist with subspecialty training in interventional radiology. He specializes in minimally invasive procedures to help diagnose and treat various conditions affecting the body’s organs. In his practice, he uses medical imaging technologies, including ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and fluoroscopy, to guide procedures accurately without always requiring conventional surgery.
One of his areas of expertise is the treatment of liver nodules and liver cancer through procedures such as Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE), Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), and Microwave Ablation (MWA). He also manages various liver conditions, including tumors, nodules, cancer, and liver abscesses.
In terms of education, Dr. Sugianto Santoso completed his medical degree at Maranatha Christian University in Bandung before pursuing specialist training in radiology at the University of Indonesia.
Dr. Sugianto Santoso, Sp.Rad (K)RI, is available for consultations at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital on the following schedule:
- Tuesday: 3:00–6:00 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB)
- Thursday: 12:00–4:00 PM WIB
- Saturday: 10:00 AM–1:00 PM WIB
Procedures Performed by Dr. Sugianto, Sp.Rad (K)RI, at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital
Dr. Sugianto is qualified to perform various interventional radiology procedures to help manage different medical conditions.
The following procedures may be performed depending on the patient’s condition and medical indications.
1. Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)
TACE is a procedure used to treat liver cancer by delivering chemotherapy drugs and embolic materials through blood vessels to the tumor. The procedure aims to block the blood supply to the tumor while delivering anticancer medication directly to the target area, with relatively limited effects on the surrounding liver tissue.
2. Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) Y-90
SIRT Y-90 is a form of internal radiation therapy that uses tiny radioactive beads containing Yttrium-90. These beads are delivered through blood vessels to the tumor in the liver, allowing radiation to be directed at the target area to help control cancer cell growth.
3. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
RFA is a procedure that uses high-energy radio waves to generate heat and destroy tumor tissue. The doctor inserts a specialized needle into the tumor under imaging guidance, such as ultrasound or a CT scan, allowing thermal energy to be directed at the target area.
4. Microwave Ablation (MWA)
MWA is a procedure that destroys tumors using microwave energy to generate heat. The doctor inserts a specialized probe into the tumor under medical imaging guidance. The resulting heat is then used to damage and destroy the tumor tissue.
5. Cryoablation
Cryoablation is a procedure that destroys tumor tissue using extremely low temperatures. The doctor inserts a thin metal probe into the tumor under imaging guidance and then delivers a low-temperature gas to freeze the target tissue, causing the tumor cells to become damaged and die.
