HIFU Technology at Mandaya Puri Successfully Shrinks 6.2 cm Adenomyosis to 4.8 cm by dr. Rahmadsyah, Sp.OG(K)FER

Teknologi HIFU di RS Mandaya Puri Berhasil Turunkan Adenomiosis 6,2 cm Jadi 4,8 cm oleh dr. Rahmadsyah Sp.OG(K)FER

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. This condition can cause various symptoms, including severe menstrual pain, excessive menstrual bleeding, abdominal fullness or enlargement, chronic pelvic pain, and fertility problems or infertility. In some women, adenomyosis can significantly affect quality of life due to recurring pain during every menstrual cycle.

Adenomiosis

Recently, dr. Rahmadsyah, Sp.OG(K)FER, M.Kes, MARS, an obstetrics and gynecology (obgyn) fertility consultant at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, treated a 6.2 cm adenomyosis case using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology. After the procedure, the patient’s adenomyosis successfully shrank to 4.8 cm with a tissue necrosis rate reaching 80–90%.

The patient had previously experienced infertility and difficulty conceiving due to adenomyosis. Now, within the next 3 to 4 months, the patient is preparing to begin a pregnancy program with dr. Rahmadsyah.

dr. Rahmadsyah Explains the Patient’s Adenomyosis Condition

According to dr. Rahmadsyah, the patient came with complaints of prolonged menstruation and severe menstrual pain. In addition, the patient had experienced fertility problems for approximately 10 years due to adenomyosis. This condition made it difficult for the patient to conceive despite undergoing pregnancy programs for years.

“Today, we performed a HIFU procedure, which stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, on a patient experiencing prolonged menstruation, severe pain during menstruation, and infertility for 10 years,” explained dr. Rahmadsyah.

During the procedure, the patient underwent incision-free HIFU treatment in a prone position. This technology combines ultrasound and MRI guidance to help doctors accurately identify the location and size of the adenomyosis before ultrasound energy is directed to the target tissue. In this patient, the adenomyosis measured 6.2 cm before treatment.

“It turns out the patient responded very well. The adenomyosis, which initially measured 6.2 cm, immediately decreased to 4.8 cm, with tissue necrosis reaching 80–90%,” said dr. Rahmadsyah.

After the HIFU procedure, the patient is scheduled to begin a pregnancy program approximately 3–4 months later once the uterine condition improves.

Learn About HIFU, From the Procedure to Its Advantages

HIFU is a non-surgical treatment technology that uses high-intensity ultrasound waves to destroy abnormal tissue inside the body without surgery or skin incisions. The technology works by focusing ultrasound energy on adenomyosis or fibroids, generating heat of approximately 60–90 degrees Celsius to gradually damage abnormal cells.

After the procedure, the damaged tissue will naturally be absorbed by the body over the following weeks to months. Simply put, the mechanism of HIFU can be compared to a magnifying glass focusing sunlight on a single point to create heat.

Besides eliminating the need for surgery and incisions, HIFU also offers several advantages in adenomyosis treatment, including:

  • Post-procedure pain is generally milder compared to conventional surgery.
  • The therapy uses high-intensity ultrasound waves without radiation exposure.
  • Ultrasound waves work precisely and directly on the targeted tissue.
  • The treatment helps preserve the uterus, potentially maintaining reproductive function.
  • Since no open surgery is involved, the risk of bleeding is relatively lower.
  • Recovery time tends to be faster, reducing the need for prolonged hospitalization.
  • Patients can usually return to daily activities more quickly after the procedure.

HIFU Has Been Used Worldwide to Treat Hundreds of Thousands of Cases

Although HIFU may still be unfamiliar to some people in Indonesia, this technology has already been widely used in many countries as a non-surgical treatment option for fibroids and adenomyosis.

The procedure has become increasingly popular because it is minimally invasive, does not require incisions, and offers a relatively faster recovery period compared to conventional surgery.

Here are several facts about HIFU technology:

  • HIFU has been used in more than 37 countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, Spain, China, Germany, and Italy.
  • The technology has been used to treat more than 500,000 patients globally.
  • HIFU has received recognition from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • HIFU devices have also obtained European CE certification as an international medical device safety and quality standard.
