Heart Rate Above 100 Beats per Minute: Is This Normal?

Detak Jantung di Atas 100 Kali per Menit, Apakah Kondisi Ini Normal?

The normal resting heart rate for adults is generally between 60 and 100 beats per minute. So, what does it mean if your heart rate is above 100 beats per minute? This may be a sign of tachycardia, a type of abnormal heart rhythm or arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat faster than normal.

With tachycardia, the heart beats more than 100 times per minute while at rest. The rapid heartbeat may last for several seconds to several hours. By comparison, a normal resting heart rate is generally between 60 and 100 beats per minute when a person is not physically active.

When the heart beats too frequently, it does not have enough time to fill with blood between beats. This can become dangerous if the heart is unable to supply enough blood and oxygen to the body’s cells.

Types of Tachycardia

Tachycardia can be classified based on the part of the heart where the abnormal electrical signals originate. It can occur in any of the heart’s four chambers: the two upper chambers, known as the atria, and the two lower chambers, known as the ventricles.

Some types of tachycardia can occur repeatedly and vary in severity. Some may be relatively mild, while others can cause more serious health problems. A doctor can determine which type of tachycardia you have and recommend the appropriate treatment.

In general, tachycardia can be divided into:

  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT): This type of tachycardia originates in the upper chambers of the heart, or the atria. Examples include atrial fibrillation (AFib) and premature atrial contractions.
  • Ventricular tachycardia: This type originates in the lower chambers of the heart, or the ventricles. Examples include ventricular fibrillation and Torsades de Pointes. Some types of ventricular tachycardia can seriously affect the heart’s ability to pump blood and require immediate medical attention.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Tachycardia and When to See a Doctor

Not everyone with tachycardia experiences symptoms. In some people, a rapid heartbeat is only discovered during a routine health check-up or heart examination performed for another condition.

When symptoms do occur, tachycardia may cause:

  • A racing or pounding heartbeat, or a sensation of fluttering in the chest (palpitations).
  • Chest pain or discomfort.
  • A rapid pulse.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Fainting.

When Should You See a Doctor?

There are many possible causes of a rapid heartbeat. If you feel that your heart is beating too fast, especially while resting or if the episodes happen repeatedly, you should schedule a medical check-up to determine the cause.

Seek immediate medical attention if a rapid heartbeat is accompanied by:

  • Chest pain or discomfort.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Severe weakness.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Fainting or feeling like you are about to faint.

One of the most serious types of abnormal heart rhythm is ventricular fibrillation. This is a medical emergency because the heart is unable to pump blood effectively throughout the body. As a result, blood pressure can drop dramatically, and the person’s pulse and breathing may stop, leading to cardiac arrest. A person experiencing this condition may suddenly lose consciousness and collapse. Immediate medical treatment is required.

Tachycardia Treatment at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

Treatment for tachycardia at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital is tailored to the type, cause, severity, and individual condition of each patient. One treatment option for certain heart rhythm disorders is cardiac ablation.

Cardiac ablation is a procedure used to treat arrhythmias by creating small areas of scar tissue in the part of the heart responsible for abnormal electrical signals. Depending on the technique, the procedure may use heat, cold, or electrical energy to disrupt abnormal electrical signals and help restore a more regular heart rhythm.

Cardiac ablation is generally performed using a catheter, a thin, flexible tube inserted through a blood vessel and guided to the heart. With the help of cardiac mapping technology, doctors can identify the area responsible for the abnormal heart rhythm before performing the ablation.

At Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, a range of cardiac ablation technologies is available, including:

  • 2D ablation, which uses two-dimensional mapping to help doctors identify and treat the source of abnormal heart rhythms.
  • 3D ablation, which uses three-dimensional mapping technology to provide a more detailed view of the heart’s structure and electrical activity, helping doctors identify the target area more precisely.
  • Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA), one of the latest cardiac ablation technologies, which uses high-energy electrical pulses delivered over a short period to target heart tissue responsible for abnormal rhythms.

With these different treatment options available, doctors can select the ablation technique that best matches the patient’s type of arrhythmia and individual condition. Not every patient requires the same ablation technology, making evaluation by a cardiologist, particularly an arrhythmia subspecialist, an important part of determining the appropriate treatment.

Arrhythmia Cardiologist at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital: dr. Sebastian

dr. Sebastian Andy Manurung, Sp.JP, Subsp. Ar(K), FIHA

Mandaya’s Arrhythmia Heart Center is supported by dr. Sebastian Andy Manurung, Sp.JP, Subsp. Ar(K), FIHA, a cardiologist and vascular specialist with a subspecialty in arrhythmia. He treats various types of heart rhythm disorders, including conditions that cause the heart to beat too fast, too slowly, or irregularly.

Before determining treatment, dr. Sebastian evaluates the patient’s type and cause of arrhythmia as well as their overall heart condition. Treatment is then tailored to the individual and may include medication, implantation of a pacemaker, or cardiac ablation.

Dr. Sebastian completed his medical education at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran, before continuing his cardiology and vascular medicine specialist training at FKUI/Harapan Kita National Cardiovascular Center. He also obtained an arrhythmia consultant qualification from the Indonesian College of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine.

For patients who require cardiac ablation, dr. Sebastian has experience performing various ablation techniques, including 3D mapping ablation and Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). For patients who require pacemaker therapy, he is also experienced in pacemaker implantation, including Micra.

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital also provides Pacemaker Reprogramming services to check and adjust pacemaker settings according to the patient’s condition and needs.

Dr. Sebastian Andy Manurung, Sp.JP, Subsp. Ar(K), FIHA is available at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital on:

  • Tuesday: 4:00 PM–8:00 PM WIB
  • Thursday: 4:00 PM–8:00 PM WIB
  • Saturday: 1:00 PM–5:00 PM WIB
