A pinched nerve is a condition in which a nerve receives pressure from surrounding tissue, such as bone, cartilage, muscle, or tendon. This pressure can cause various symptoms, ranging from pain, tingling, and numbness to weakness in the affected area of the body. Injuries to bones, joints, ligaments, or muscles can also trigger a pinched nerve, whether due to tissue changes or damage, or swelling that occurs after an injury.
A similar condition was experienced by Joseph Wone, a 72-year-old Australian citizen. He suffered a pinched nerve at the L5-S1 spinal segment, which was then treated through an arthrospine procedure using a minimally invasive approach at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital. The procedure was performed by dr. Christian Ariono, Sp.BS-FTB, FINSS, FINPS, FICS, with an approach tailored to the patient’s condition and medical needs.

“And the result, after one day (post-surgery), feels good. It feels much better. We hope and pray this is the end of it all (the pinched nerve condition) and that I won’t need to see dr. Christian Ariono again. I felt a bit of pain (after the surgery), but you have to remember, after the first day, the nursing team gave me pain relief medication. But today, I feel I can get up and walk. Yesterday, of course, I couldn’t,” said the patient.

The story of how the patient’s pinched nerve began
Joseph Wone, an Australian citizen who has lived in Indonesia for more than 30 years, began experiencing back pain after a fall in May 2025. At first, the complaint wasn’t too severe, so Joseph tried to manage it by taking pain relievers. However, the pain he experienced actually worsened over time.
Joseph then consulted several different hospitals to find suitable treatment for his condition. However, Joseph felt he hadn’t received sufficiently open information about the procedures that would be performed.
As a patient, Joseph wanted a clear explanation of his condition and the procedure to be performed, since it involved his spine. This became an important consideration for Joseph in choosing a doctor and hospital to treat his condition.
Experience of pinched nerve surgery at Mandaya with dr. Christian Ariono
Joseph then consulted with dr. Christian Ariono, Sp.BS-FTB, FINSS, FINPS, FICS at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital. During the consultation, dr. Christian reviewed various medical documents Joseph already had, including MRI results and examinations from previous doctors.
According to Joseph, dr. Christian’s thoroughness in reviewing his history and examination results made him feel more confident about the proposed treatment plan.
The doctor’s friendly demeanor and the explanations given during the consultation were also factors that led Joseph and his wife to choose dr. Christian to treat his condition.
After discussing his condition and the necessary procedure with dr. Christian, Joseph decided to undergo surgery at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital. The preparation process was also relatively quick. About two days after consulting with dr. Christian, the Mandaya team had arranged the schedule, and Joseph underwent surgery to treat the pinched nerve in the L5-S1 area using a minimally invasive approach.
The patient’s condition after pinched nerve surgery
One day after the surgery, Joseph felt much better. He still experienced some pain after the procedure, but this was managed with pain relief medication provided by the nursing team.
The change Joseph felt was also evident in his ability to start getting up and walking. While he couldn’t walk on the first day after surgery, by the next day Joseph already felt able to get up and gradually carry out that activity.
Joseph hopes the procedure he underwent will resolve the pinched nerve issue that has been bothering him. The experience also gave him a sense of relief, as he was able to go through the treatment and recovery process with a medical team that he felt provided thorough attention and care.
Recognizing the symptoms of a pinched nerve
Symptoms of a pinched nerve can vary depending on which nerve is under pressure and where the problem occurs. Some common complaints include:
- Numbness in a certain area of the body.
- Sharp, throbbing, or burning pain.
- Tingling or a sensation like being pricked by needles.
- Weakness in a certain part of the body, especially during certain activities.
- Pain that radiates from the affected nerve area to other parts of the body.
- Pain that intensifies with certain movements, such as turning the head or moving a specific body part.
- A sensation of the hand or foot “falling asleep,” even when not in a position that would normally cause this.
If you experience one or more of these symptoms, especially if the complaints worsen, persist, or begin to interfere with daily activities, you should consult a doctor promptly. An examination is needed to determine the cause of the complaint and decide on treatment appropriate to each patient’s condition.
