The journey of cancer treatment is often long and complex, especially when cancer cells spread to other organs. This condition is known as metastasis, where cancer from its original site reappears in different parts of the body and requires advanced therapeutic approaches.
This was experienced by a 65-year-old patient, Mr. Sumarto, who had a history of colon cancer since 2016. After undergoing partial colon removal surgery and chemotherapy, his condition initially improved and remained under control. However, during routine monitoring with PET CT scans, metastasis from the colon to the lungs was detected.
The patient then came to Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri to undergo cryoablation (cryotherapy) with dr. Sugianto Santoso, Sp.Rad (K)RI, a radiology specialist with a subspecialty in interventional radiology.
After the procedure, the patient reported encouraging results, noting that there was no further tumor growth. Within a week, he felt more comfortable, with improved breathing capacity. Previously, he had difficulty taking deep breaths, but after the procedure, breathing felt lighter. He was also able to resume physical activities, including light exercise such as walking, with noticeable improvement.

A Case of Metastatic Lung Cancer
Initially, the lesions in the lungs appeared as small nodules, but over time they increased in size. In 2022, the patient underwent surgery on the right lung followed by chemotherapy. Although there was temporary improvement, the cancer recurred in 2023. The patient underwent multiple additional cycles of chemotherapy, but evaluation showed that the lung tumors did not respond optimally and continued to grow.
Upon further evaluation at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, the metastases in the right lung consisted of several nodules, two of which were relatively large—approximately 6 cm and 4 cm in diameter. One of the tumors had invaded the rib and was close to the spine, causing significant pain.
To manage this condition, the patient underwent a cryoablation procedure in January 2026 performed by dr. Sugianto. The procedure utilized five cryo probes to freeze and destroy tumor tissue directly with high precision.
Promising Results: Improved Breathing
After the procedure, the patient experienced significant improvement, particularly in reduced pain and better breathing. Daily activities became more manageable, including light exercise such as walking.
Initial evaluation showed a favorable response to the treatment. In the following months, the treated tumor tissue will be monitored regularly to assess changes in size and to ensure that no active cancer cells remain.
However, several smaller lesions remain in the lungs as part of the metastatic disease. Therefore, a biopsy was also performed to determine the most appropriate next steps in treatment, including the possibility of continuing systemic therapy under the care of a hematology-oncology specialist.
The availability of cryoablation technology at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital provides an additional treatment option for patients with metastatic cancer, particularly when previous therapies have not produced optimal results. This approach aims to help control tumor growth while improving the patient’s overall quality of life.
