Patient Experience with Breast Tumor Lumpectomy at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital: “The Recovery Was Quite Fast”

Pengalaman Pasien Tumor Payudara Jalani Lumpektomi di RS Mandaya Puri: "Cukup Cepat Pemulihannya"

A breast tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue that can be either benign or malignant. For benign breast tumors, doctors do not always recommend removal if the tumor does not cause symptoms or other problems. However, some benign tumors can continue to grow and put pressure on surrounding tissue, potentially causing pain or other discomfort. In such cases, tumor removal may be considered to help relieve symptoms and prevent further problems.

This was also the experience of a patient with a benign breast tumor who underwent a lumpectomy at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital with dr. Enos H. Siburian, Sp.B (K) Onk. Although the examination results indicated that the tumor was benign, the doctor still recommended removing it as a preventive measure and to avoid potential problems or symptoms in the future. A lumpectomy removes the tumor tissue without removing the entire breast.

For the patient, both the procedure and recovery process also felt relatively quick. She said that if her condition was considered stable after surgery, she could go home the following day and return for a follow-up appointment about one week later.

“One day after the surgery, if my condition was okay, I could go home right away. Then, I had another check-up one week later. So, the recovery was quite fast,” the patient said.

A lump and breast pain appeared initially

The patient, Fitri, 30, first noticed a lump in her left breast around March 2023. Initially, she felt that the lump was related to her menstrual cycle. However, as time went by, the lump remained even after her period had ended and began to cause pain.

Because the lump felt increasingly larger and was accompanied by pain, the patient decided to have it examined. After searching for information about hospitals and reading several patient experiences, she chose to undergo an examination at the Mandaya Breast Advanced Cancer Center.

She was examined by dr. Enos H. Siburian, Sp.B (K) Onk, including a breast ultrasound and physical examination. Based on the initial examination, the characteristics of the lump appeared to indicate a benign tumor. However, the doctor explained that the definitive nature of the tumor would still need to be confirmed through a pathology examination after the tissue was removed.

Based on this consideration, the patient was advised to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. The procedure was performed to remove the lump while also helping confirm the diagnosis through tissue examination. Tumor removal may also be considered to prevent the lump from continuing to grow and causing problems in the future.

Recovery after lumpectomy was relatively fast

The patient then underwent a lumpectomy to remove the tumor in her left breast. During the process, she admitted that she had felt anxious before undergoing the procedure. However, the doctor’s explanation regarding her condition and treatment process helped her feel more reassured.

The patient explained that if her condition was considered stable after surgery, she could go home one day after the procedure. A follow-up appointment was then scheduled approximately one week later to monitor her recovery.

In addition to the relatively fast recovery, the patient also said that she did not experience significant pain around the surgical wound after the procedure. This experience made her increasingly aware of the importance of having breast lumps or changes examined as early as possible, especially when the symptoms do not go away or become more noticeable.

A breast lump does not always indicate cancer. However, any unusual change should still be examined so that a doctor can determine its cause and provide appropriate treatment. The sooner a condition is identified, the sooner the appropriate examination and treatment can be determined.

Understanding lumpectomy for breast tumor removal without removing the entire breast

Lumpectomy is a procedure to remove a tumor or abnormal tissue from the breast while preserving most of the breast tissue. The procedure can be performed to help determine whether a tumor is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous), or as part of breast cancer treatment.

For benign breast tumors, lumpectomy may be considered when a lump continues to grow, causes pain or other symptoms, or when the doctor recommends removing it to confirm the diagnosis through tissue examination. Meanwhile, for breast cancer, the purpose of lumpectomy is to remove the tumor along with a margin of surrounding tissue without having to remove the entire breast, as in a mastectomy.

Because it preserves most of the breast tissue, lumpectomy is often referred to as breast-conserving surgery. In patients with breast cancer, the procedure is generally followed by radiation therapy to help reduce the risk of the cancer returning.

Minimally invasive endoscopic lumpectomy at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

Endoscopic lumpectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to remove breast tumors or lumps, whether benign or malignant, while preserving most of the healthy breast tissue. Unlike conventional lumpectomy, which generally requires an incision close to the tumor, the endoscopic technique allows doctors to make an incision in a less visible area.

In some cases, particularly when the tumor is located relatively far from the areola or is relatively large, making an incision directly on the breast surface may leave a more visible scar. This can be an important consideration for patients, particularly in terms of their appearance after the procedure.

Endoscopic lumpectomy can be one option to address this concern. The procedure is performed through a small incision that can be made in the axillary area or around the edge of the areola (periareolar). Through this access point, the doctor can reach the tumor and remove it without making a direct incision on the visible part of the breast.

At Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, endoscopic lumpectomy can be one of the treatment options for breast tumor removal, depending on the patient’s condition and individual needs. In general, the procedure involves the following steps:

  • Making a small incision in a less visible area: The doctor creates an access point through the armpit or around the areola to help minimize visible scarring on the breast surface.
  • Inserting a camera and surgical instruments: An endoscope and specialized instruments are inserted through the incision to reach the tumor.
  • Viewing the tissue on a monitor: The camera on the endoscope provides a real-time view of the breast tissue on a monitor, allowing the doctor to see the treatment area more clearly.
  • Removing the tumor: With the help of endoscopic visualization, the doctor removes the tumor or tissue that needs to be treated while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible.
  • Considering the aesthetic outcome: Because the surgical access is made through a less visible area, scarring on the breast surface may be less noticeable than a direct incision over the tumor.
