A kidney tumor is an abnormal tissue growth in the kidney that can be either benign or malignant (kidney cancer). In many cases, kidney tumors do not cause symptoms in the early stages, so they are often detected only after they have grown larger. As the tumor enlarges, patients may experience symptoms such as lower back or flank pain, blood in the urine, a lump around the waist area, fatigue, recurrent fever, and unexplained weight loss. Because these symptoms can be subtle, regular medical check-ups are important for early detection.

Recently, Prof. dr. Chaidir Arif Mochtar, Sp.U(K), PhD, a urology oncology consultant specialist at RS Mandaya Royal Puri, successfully removed a large kidney tumor measuring approximately 6x8x5 cm using the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system. The robotic-assisted procedure was performed to precisely remove the tumor while preserving the patient’s kidney.

Large Kidney Tumor with a Complex Shape

During the procedure, Prof. Chaidir performed a robotic-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, a kidney tumor removal surgery using a robotic system while preserving the patient’s kidney.
“We recently performed a robotic-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy on a right kidney tumor. We removed only the tumor because its location and shape were quite challenging. However, with the help of the robotic system, we successfully completed the procedure. Now we are waiting for the pathology results,” said Prof. Chaidir.
According to Prof. Chaidir, the tumor measured approximately 6x8x5 cm. The size was nearly comparable to a normal kidney, making the surgery particularly challenging.
“The tumor was already quite large and had a difficult shape. It measured around 6x8x5 cm, so its size was almost as large as a normal kidney,” he explained.
Because of the tumor’s size and complex location, the procedure required a high level of precision to remove the tumor completely without removing the entire kidney.
Understanding the da Vinci Xi Robot and Its Advantages

This advanced robotic surgical system is equipped with four precision robotic arms controlled directly by the surgeon through a high-resolution 3D visual console.
The technology allows surgeons to see internal organs more clearly and in greater detail. Meanwhile, the flexible robotic arms, designed to mimic human hand movements, can reach narrow and difficult areas, helping improve surgical precision and outcomes.
Here are some of the advantages of the da Vinci Xi robotic system in surgical procedures:
1. Greater Precision and Flexibility
In conventional surgery, the success of the procedure heavily depends on the surgeon’s hand stability and precision. Even highly experienced surgeons still face limitations in reaching certain areas with maximum accuracy.
The da Vinci Xi robotic system addresses these challenges through advanced robotic arms combined with high-definition 3D visualization. The robotic arms provide more stable, precise, and flexible movements, enabling surgeons to perform highly delicate and complex maneuvers during surgery.
With this technology, surgical procedures can be performed more accurately, helping reduce complications and improve outcomes. The entire robotic system remains fully controlled by the surgeon at all times.
2. Minimally Invasive Technique
One of the major advantages of the da Vinci Xi system is its minimally invasive approach. Unlike open surgery, which requires large incisions, robotic surgery only requires several small incisions for surgical instrument access.
Through these small incisions, robotic arms and specialized instruments can enter the surgical area more precisely and efficiently.
This minimally invasive approach offers several benefits, including:
- Lower risk of bleeding
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery
- Reduced postoperative pain
Smaller incisions also result in less noticeable scars from an aesthetic perspective.
3. Can Be Used for Various Complex Surgeries
The da Vinci Xi robotic system is designed to assist with a wide range of complex surgical procedures across different medical specialties. The technology enables surgeons to perform highly accurate operations in difficult-to-reach areas.
Specialties that may utilize this technology include urology, gynecology, digestive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, as well as hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures.
With these capabilities, surgeons can manage more challenging cases with greater precision and confidence while providing patients access to modern surgical technology.
4. Faster Recovery and Better Surgical Outcomes
The combination of high precision, minimally invasive techniques, and advanced surgical capabilities allows the da Vinci Xi system to help improve surgical outcomes.
Patients who undergo robotic surgery generally experience faster recovery compared to conventional surgery. Postoperative pain is often milder, and hospital stays are typically shorter.
Because surrounding tissues experience less trauma, the risk of complications such as infection and excessive bleeding can also be reduced. As a result, patients may return to their daily activities sooner after surgery.
Types of Surgeries That Can Be Performed with the da Vinci Xi Robot
The da Vinci Xi robotic system can be used for various surgical procedures, including:
- Gynecological surgery
- Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery
- Urological surgery, such as nephrectomy
- Colorectal surgery involving the colon and rectum
Steps of a da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery Procedure
In general, robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi system involves the following steps:
- The patient is placed under general anesthesia to remain asleep during the procedure.
- The medical team prepares the robotic system and positions the robotic arms near the surgical area.
- The surgeon makes several small incisions according to the procedure’s requirements.
- Specialized surgical instruments are inserted through the small incisions.
- The instruments are then connected to the robotic arms.
- The surgeon controls the operation from a dedicated console using high-resolution 3D visualization.
- All instrument movements are controlled directly by the surgeon through the flexible and precise robotic system.
- Once the procedure is completed, the instruments are removed and the incisions are closed.
When Should You Consult a Doctor?
Kidney tumors often do not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. In fact, many cases are discovered incidentally during examinations for other medical conditions. Therefore, it is important not to ignore symptoms related to the kidneys or urinary tract, especially if they persist or worsen over time.
You should consult a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Pain in the flank or side of the body when touched
- Lower back pain
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fever
- Low red blood cell levels (anemia)
Early detection is important because it increases the chances of successful treatment.
