An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a condition in which the aorta—the main blood vessel located in the abdomen—experiences abnormal enlargement. If left untreated, this swelling can be dangerous because it may rupture and cause fatal internal bleeding. To prevent such complications, modern medicine now relies on safer and minimally invasive interventional technologies, one of which is EVAR.
EVAR, or Endovascular Aneurysm Repair, has become an increasingly recommended therapy because the procedure is quick, carries lower risks, and offers a more comfortable recovery for patients. Here is the complete explanation of EVAR that you need to know.

What is EVAR?
EVAR is an endovascular intervention procedure aimed at repairing aneurysms in the aorta. An aneurysm occurs when the aortic wall expands beyond its normal size, making it fragile and prone to rupture. To prevent this dangerous condition, EVAR involves placing a stent graft—a special tube-like device—inside the aorta. This device functions as a new pathway for blood flow, ensuring that pressure no longer affects the enlarged section of the aorta.
In other words, EVAR is a technique for placing a stent or graft inside the blood vessel without the need for major surgery, making it a safer option for many patients.
What is the main function of EVAR?
The primary function of EVAR is to prevent the rupture of the aorta that has developed an aneurysm. Once the stent graft is placed, it creates a new channel so that blood no longer flows through the enlarged part of the aorta. By reducing pressure on the weakened area, the risk of rupture can be significantly minimized.
In addition, EVAR helps maintain stable blood flow, reduces symptoms in certain patients, and lowers the risk of severe complications in the future.
How is the EVAR procedure performed?
Here is how the EVAR procedure is carried out:
- The doctor creates access through the blood vessels in the right or left thigh.
- This access may be done using a small incision or a simple needle puncture.
- Once access is established, interventional tools are inserted through the blood vessel, similar to a cardiac catheterization process.
- The stent graft is guided toward the abdominal aorta, precisely at the aneurysm location.
- The device is carefully positioned so the stent graft sits in the correct spot and functions as a new channel for blood flow.
- After the stent graft is fully deployed, all instruments are removed.
- The access point in the thigh is then closed, leaving no instruments behind at the site.
- The only device that remains inside the body is the stent graft, which protects the aorta from future rupture risk.
