A pinched nerve occurs when there is excessive pressure on a nerve by surrounding tissues such as bones, cartilage, muscles, or tendons. This pressure can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness.
A 71-year-old patient suffering from a pinched nerve underwent arthrospine surgery at Mandaya Puri Hospital to treat the condition. The results were highly satisfying, with the patient able to walk independently just two hours after the operation. What was the experience like?

Testimony and Experience of a Pinched Nerve Patient Undergoing Arthrospine Surgery at Mandaya Hospital
A patient from Jogja underwent arthrospine surgery to treat her pinched nerve condition. She had been suffering from the condition since 2014 and was initially treated with medication, which brought relief. However, in 2023, the symptoms returned.
She began experiencing symptoms such as tingling in her legs and numbness that led to falls while walking. Even going to the market required her to walk cautiously and be supported to maintain balance.
This elderly patient was actually active in line dancing and enjoyed physical activities with friends. Unfortunately, her doctor brought troubling news — she had to stop line dancing due to her worsening pinched nerve condition.
The doctor explained that continuing line dancing could aggravate the pinched nerve. As a result, she had to stop exercising and felt saddened by her reduced physical activity, having gone without exercise for two months.
The patient shared that she had undergone 25 therapy sessions with no improvement. She also tried massage and acupuncture. She even traveled to Penang, Malaysia for surgery but was hindered by the high costs.
Eventually, she asked her child to take her to Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, where she met with Dr. Christian Ariono, Sp.BS, FINSS, FICS, FINPS. After just one examination and consultation, she agreed to undergo arthrospine surgery to address her pinched nerve.
The arthrospine surgery yielded highly positive and significant results. Just two hours post-operation, she was already able to walk, go to the bathroom, and shower on her own. Prior to the surgery, she had difficulty even showering due to constant tingling.
One day after surgery, the elderly patient was able to return home to Jogja, with her pinched nerve condition successfully treated by Dr. Christian.
Dr. Christian’s Explanation on Arthrospine Surgery for Pinched Nerves
Arthrospine is a minimally invasive surgical technique using only a small incision (1.5 cm) to treat pinched nerves.
Before performing the arthrospine procedure, Dr. Christian conducted an MRI scan. The results confirmed that the patient was suffering from a pinched nerve at the L4-L5 level, a condition known as lumbar canal stenosis.
“We recommended arthrospine endoscopic lumbar decompression and discectomy at L4-L5, which is a minimally invasive spinal surgery,” said Dr. Christian.
“We use an endoscope to open a path and explore the spine with minimal tissue damage. The incision is only about 1–1.5 cm,” he added.
During the surgery, Dr. Christian made a single small incision to relieve the nerve that was compressed in the spine as effectively as possible.
