Pinched nerves do not only occur in the lower back, but are now increasingly found in the neck area. dr. Christian Permana, Sp.BS-FTB, FINSS, FICS, a neurosurgeon at RS Mandaya Royal Puri, explains that the rise in neck pinched nerve cases is largely triggered by modern lifestyles, especially the habit of working with the neck bent forward for long periods while using laptops or mobile phones.

“It turns out that pinched nerves do not only frequently occur in the lower back, but cases are now also increasing in the neck area. Why is that? Because the neck area is increasingly working in a bent-forward position, for example when using laptops or mobile phones,” said dr. Christian Permana.

So, what are the treatment options for a pinched nerve in the neck? In this article, dr. Christian Permana explains the procedures available at RS Mandaya Royal Puri to treat neck pinched nerve cases.

Treatment for a Pinched Nerve in the Neck at RS Mandaya Puri by dr. Christian Permana

The following are treatment options available at RS Mandaya Royal Puri for managing a pinched nerve in the neck:

1. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

In mild cases, surgery may not be necessary. One of the alternative therapies that can be performed is radiofrequency ablation.

“If the pinched nerve is still mild, we can perform alternative procedures, for example radiofrequency ablation, which involves injecting the spinal joint area and then heating it,” said dr. Christian Permana.

This procedure aims to reduce pain by modulating the nerves that cause pain, without the need for major surgery. It is generally considered for patients with mild to moderate symptoms.

2. Endoscopic Surgery: Small Incision, Faster Recovery

If the pinched nerve is at a moderate level and predominantly affects one side, surgery can be performed from the back of the neck using an endoscopic technique.

“If we operate from the back, in cases where the pinched nerve is not too severe and is dominant on one side, we can perform endoscopic surgery with an incision of approximately only 1 cm, allowing for faster recovery,” explained dr. Christian Permana.

With an incision of around 1 cm, this procedure is categorized as minimally invasive. Hospitalization is relatively short, about 1–2 days, enabling patients to return to daily activities sooner.

3. Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery with Implant

In more severe cases, especially when the cervical disc has experienced significant damage, surgery from the front of the neck is required to replace the damaged disc with an implant.

“If the case is more severe, then we have to replace the cervical disc. We will remove the entire disc and replace it with an implant,” he said.

At RS Mandaya Royal Puri, two types of implants are available: the conventional model and the latest-generation implant.

“The first is the older or conventional model. If this implant is used, neck movement will be slightly limited because its purpose is to fuse the cervical bones,” he explained.

However, with technological advancements, modern implants are now available that can preserve neck flexibility.

“The newest implant was developed to allow movement, so the neck remains flexible and functions normally as before,” he continued.

For this disc replacement procedure, the average hospital stay is around 3–4 days.

Safer Neck Pinched Nerve Surgery with IONM Technology

In every neck pinched nerve surgery, RS Mandaya Royal Puri uses intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) technology to enhance patient safety.

“For neck pinched nerve surgery at Mandaya Hospital, we always use intraoperative neuromonitoring so that during the surgery, the cervical nerves are directly monitored. Therefore, the risk of disability or even paralysis is extremely small,” emphasized dr. Christian Permana.

With real-time nerve monitoring during surgery, the risk of complications can be minimized, ensuring greater patient safety.

Profile of dr. Christian Permana and His Practice Schedule at RS Mandaya Royal Puri

dr. Christian Permana, Sp.BS, FTB, FINSS, FICS is a neurosurgeon with expertise in treating pinched nerves using minimally invasive techniques. He is skilled in various modern procedures, including Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD), Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD), Percutaneous Stenoscopic Lumbar Decompression (PSLD), Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), and microdiscectomy.

The minimally invasive approach he applies is designed to minimize damage to surrounding tissues. With these techniques, postoperative pain tends to be milder, the risk of complications is lower, and recovery time is shorter. This allows patients to return to their daily activities more quickly with greater comfort throughout the treatment process.
