Polydactyly and syndactyly are congenital conditions affecting the toes that are present from birth. Polydactyly refers to a condition in which a child has more toes than normal, while syndactyly occurs when two or more toes are fused together. These conditions not only affect the appearance of the feet but can also interfere with function and comfort during daily activities. Dr. Jecky Chandra, M.Kes, Sp.OT (K), CIPS, AIFO-K, an orthopedic specialist at RS Mandaya Royal Puri, treated a unique case in which a child experienced both polydactyly and syndactyly simultaneously.
To address this condition, dr. Jecky performed a specially tailored reconstructive toe surgery based on the patient’s individual needs. The procedure aimed to restore both the shape and function of the toes optimally, allowing the child to grow and remain active more comfortably, with the best possible long-term outcome.

Reconstructive Surgery for Polydactyly and Syndactyly by dr. Jecky
In this procedure, reconstructive surgery was performed for a case of polysyndactyly, a rare congenital condition that combines two abnormalities at once: syndactyly (fused toes) and polydactyly (extra toes). In most cases, patients experience only one of these conditions, making this case particularly unique and requiring specialized treatment.
During the reconstructive procedure, dr. Jecky separated the excess toe bones and reshaped the toe structure to closely resemble normal anatomy. A cleft was then created between the toes to achieve a more proportional and functional appearance. Every step of the procedure was carefully planned to ensure optimal results.
Skin closure was performed without the need for a skin graft. A Z-plasty reconstructive technique was applied as a specialized method to close the skin effectively while preserving flexibility and improving the postoperative appearance of the toes. With this technique, the healing process is expected to proceed smoothly, while minimizing the risk of complications.
Following the procedure, the patient is expected to be able to walk and resume normal activities within approximately two weeks. The child is anticipated to return to daily routines, including school and play, with improved comfort and optimal foot function.
