Mrs. Tjo Njon Tik (54 years old) shared her experience after undergoing a hysterectomy for stage 1 endometrial cancer at RS Mandaya Royal Puri with gynecologic oncology subspecialist Dr. dr. Unedo Hence Markus Sihombing, Sp.OG, Subsp. Onk. She expressed gratitude as her latest follow-up results showed a good recovery.
“Thank God everything went well, and today, January 10, 2026, after the ultrasound, the results are good. Everything has dried up,” she said.
The decision to proceed with surgery was made after a series of examinations confirmed malignancy in the lining of her uterus.

Initial Symptoms: Heavy Bleeding and Severely Low Hemoglobin
Several years before being diagnosed with cancer, Mrs. Tjo Njon Tik experienced abnormal uterine bleeding. She reported extremely heavy menstrual bleeding, sometimes occurring twice a month. This condition caused her hemoglobin (Hb) levels to drop drastically to as low as 5.6–5.7, requiring blood transfusions due to severe weakness.
Bleeding symptoms reappeared after she entered menopause. This condition, known as postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, should not normally occur and requires immediate medical attention.
After visiting the gynecologic oncology clinic, Dr. Unedo performed a curettage procedure followed by histopathological examination. The results revealed well-differentiated endometrioid carcinoma, classified as stage 1 endometrial cancer.
Ultrasound and CT scan findings showed that the thickening of the uterine wall involved less than half of the myometrial layer, indicating that the cancer had not spread.
Hysterectomy Procedure Performed by Dr. Unedo
Treatment was carried out by Dr. Unedo, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist with a subspecialty in gynecologic oncology at RS Mandaya Royal Puri. He explained that the procedure aimed to eliminate the source of bleeding while preventing cancer progression.
“The procedure performed was a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. This means removing the uterus and the ovaries, which are sources of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone that can stimulate the growth of the uterine lining,” explained Dr. Unedo.
Through this procedure, both the uterus and ovaries were removed to eliminate hormonal stimulation that could promote cancer cell growth. The removed tissue was further analyzed through biopsy to assess the malignancy level and confirm that the cancer had not spread.
Follow-up examinations showed that the cancer remained in its early stage and had not metastasized to other organs. Early intervention played a crucial role in the success of the treatment.
Post-Surgery Condition and Message for Women
After surgery, the patient experienced significant improvement. The abnormal bleeding stopped, and the discomfort in her lower abdomen disappeared. Although she experienced mild bleeding two weeks after the procedure, it was successfully managed with medication and routine monitoring.
During her testimonial, Mrs. Tjo Njon Tik also encouraged women not to delay medical evaluation if they experience reproductive health symptoms. “If there’s a problem, don’t let it drag on too long. The sooner it’s treated, the better,” she advised.
She and her family also expressed appreciation for the hospital’s services. Her experience highlights the importance of early detection and prompt treatment in stage 1 endometrial cancer to achieve optimal outcomes and prevent further spread.
