Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, is a common condition among elderly men. Its symptoms often disrupt quality of life, such as a weak urine flow and frequent nighttime urination.
This was the case for a 77-year-old patient who experienced recurring prostate problems despite having undergone surgery in the past.

Recurrence of Enlarged Prostate Symptoms
Several years after his initial prostate surgery, the patient once again suffered from symptoms, including slow urine flow and disrupted sleep due to waking up two to three times at night to urinate. This condition left him fatigued and caused weight loss.
On the recommendation of a relative who is also a doctor in Tangerang, he was advised to try the Rezum procedure, considered safer for elderly patients.
The patient then consulted dr. Maruto Harjanggi, BSc(Hons), Sp.U, FICS, a urology specialist at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital. After thorough discussion and medical evaluation, he agreed to undergo the Rezum procedure.
The Rezum Procedure and Remarkable Results
The Rezum treatment was performed on April 16, 2025. Three months later, on July 15, 2025, the patient returned for a follow-up check to assess his prostate condition. The results were striking — his prostate, previously 140 cc, had successfully shrunk to 67 cc.
According to dr. Maruto, the patient’s prostate size was actually well above the ideal range for Rezum (40–80 cc). However, with careful evaluation and precise planning, the procedure went smoothly and achieved outstanding results.
Aside from the significant size reduction, the patient’s urine flow quality improved dramatically. The maximum flow rate reached 290 ml/second, and urination took only 14 seconds to release almost 200 cc of urine — an exceptional outcome for a 77-year-old.
After the procedure, the patient required a catheter for just one week due to mild bleeding. Throughout the process, he experienced no pain during catheter use or removal. Everything went safely thanks to the minimally invasive technology of the Rezum method.
Understanding Rezum
Rezum is an advanced technique that uses steam to shrink enlarged prostate tissue without open surgery. It is minimally invasive, ideal for elderly patients, and offers a relatively short recovery period.
This success story demonstrates that Rezum can be an effective solution even for severe prostate enlargement, as long as it is performed by an experienced urologist.
dr. Maruto Harjanggi, BSc(Hons), Sp.U, FICS completed his medical degree and urology specialization at the University of Indonesia. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, UK.
As a urology expert, he has extensive experience in performing Rezum procedures, kidney stone surgery, prostate treatments, and vasectomy.
