A patient came to Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital complaining of persistent neck and shoulder pain that had lasted for more than a year. The pain had become more frequent over the past few months, especially during activities involving neck movement such as turning the head or looking down to the left.
The patient also reported pain radiating to the upper back area, particularly on the left side. Although previous treatments had provided temporary relief, the pain returned about six months later and began to interfere with daily activities. After consulting with dr. Fransisca Pekerti, Sp.AK, an acupuncture specialist at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, the patient decided to try electroacupuncture therapy.

Explanation of Electroacupuncture by dr. Fransisca
According to dr. Fransisca, the patient had previously undergone an MRI of the cervical spine, which revealed degenerative changes in the neck vertebrae. This caused narrowing between the cervical discs, leading to nerve compression and resulting in stiffness and pain radiating from the neck to the upper back.
During the physical examination, muscle spasms and tightness were detected in the neck and left trapezius muscles. To relieve the muscle stiffness, dr. Fransisca recommended electroacupuncture therapy.
Electroacupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, followed by gentle electrical stimulation directed at the tense muscles. This stimulation helps release muscle spasms, improve blood circulation, and reduce nerve pressure. The procedure is safe, virtually painless, and uses needles much finer than standard injection needles.
Therapy Process and Frequency
The patient underwent therapy two to three times per week for about three weeks. According to dr. Fransisca, optimal results usually require a series of sessions rather than just one or two treatments. Typically, six to nine sessions are needed for maximum healing effects.
In this case, the patient completed a total of 12 electroacupuncture sessions. Over time, the initially intense pain gradually decreased. By the second to third week, the patient began noticing significant improvement, and after the 12th session, the shoulder and neck pain had nearly disappeared.
Final Results After Electroacupuncture
After completing all therapy sessions, the patient reported that the neck and shoulder pain had completely subsided. Movements of the head and shoulders, which were previously limited, became much more flexible—both when turning right and left.
In addition to reduced pain, the patient also felt more relaxed and comfortable overall. The positive effects of electroacupuncture not only alleviated pain but also improved quality of life by allowing the patient to resume daily activities without discomfort.
dr. Fransisca added that electroacupuncture is an effective non-drug therapy for managing various musculoskeletal pain conditions such as neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, and knee pain. The therapy works naturally by stimulating the nervous system and improving muscle function—without the side effects of painkillers.
