Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital successfully performed a brain tumor removal surgery on a 26-year-old patient from Purworejo, extracting a 7×6 cm tumor. The surgery was led by Dr. dr. Mardjono Tjahjadi, Sp.BS, Subsp. N-Vas, F. N-Onk, PhD, FICS, IFAANS, or more familiarly known as Dr. Joy, one of Indonesia’s leading neurosurgeons.
Just two days after the surgery, the outcome was remarkable: the patient was able to return to his favorite activity—playing games. What were the initial symptoms he experienced, and how was his journey undergoing brain tumor removal at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital with Dr. Joy?

Initial Symptoms
The patient first experienced symptoms as early as middle school, primarily in the form of frequent headaches. Over the years, the pain intensified, particularly in the top part of the head, with a throbbing migraine-like sensation.
The condition peaked in 2024 when a CT scan revealed fluid in the brain. However, it wasn’t identified as a tumor at the time. After a trip to Lombok, his health deteriorated sharply, causing him to collapse.
He was initially hospitalized in Magelang, then referred to Yogyakarta where he underwent his first brain surgery. Recovery was slow—he spent 4 days in the ICU and 2 days in a regular ward. Even after returning home, he remained weak and unable to walk.
A follow-up CT scan in December 2024 still showed a 2 cm residual tumor. But by February 2025, an MRI at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital revealed that the tumor had grown back to 6–7 cm.
How He Discovered Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital
The patient explained that he visited Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital by coincidence. While staying with a friend in Tangerang, his brother-in-law suggested getting checked at the hospital.
On his first visit, he immediately underwent an MRI. The following day, he consulted with Dr. Joy. The MRI results revealed a 7×6 cm brain tumor extending from the front to the back at the crown of the head, near the superior sagittal sinus, a critical brain structure.
According to Dr. Joy, the tumor’s location was very crucial, as it impacted essential bodily functions. If left untreated, the tumor could impair leg and arm motor functions, cognitive abilities, and coordination.
“For this type of tumor, we recommend surgical removal. A tumor measuring 7×6 cm definitely puts significant pressure on the brain, which could be potentially fatal,” Dr. Joy explained.
The medical team promptly scheduled a microsurgery procedure, which lasted around 3 hours. The entire portion of the tumor pressing on brain tissue was successfully removed.
Post-Surgery Recovery
Thanks to the smooth and efficient operation, the patient experienced an exceptional recovery. Just one hour after surgery, he was fully conscious. Two hours later, during a check-up in the ICU, all motor, cognitive, and memory functions were found to be in excellent condition.
“Since the operation went very smoothly and quickly, the patient woke up quickly—he was fully conscious within an hour. Two hours later, during our ICU visit, we tested all motor, cognitive, and memory functions—they were all excellent. Even when asked about headache pain, he said it wasn’t too bad. That’s very promising,” said Dr. Joy, who recently broke a record recognized by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI).
What’s even more impressive is that just two days after surgery, the patient was already able to play mobile games. This demonstrated that his fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive decision-making abilities were functioning optimally.
After 3–4 days of post-surgery care, the patient was discharged in stable condition. His story stands as clear evidence that timely, accurate medical intervention by experienced professionals can result in outstanding outcomes—even for large brain tumor cases.
Dr. Joy’s Profile: Neurosurgeon with a PhD from Finland
When discussing Indonesia’s top neurosurgeons, Dr. Joy is a name that cannot be overlooked. Practicing at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, he recently earned a place in the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) as the “Fastest PhD Graduate in Medical Sciences.”
He completed his PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Helsinki, Finland in just 18 months and 12 days, focusing on brain aneurysms.
In addition to his studies in Finland, Dr. Joy also expanded his expertise through clinical and research training in neurointerventional catheterization (brain DSA) at Seoul University Hospital, South Korea.
Dr. Joy is also one of the few neurosurgeons in Indonesia proficient in performing Awake Brain Surgery—a procedure done while the patient is conscious.
With an outstanding educational background and extensive clinical experience, Dr. Joy is now recognized as one of Indonesia’s top neurosurgeons. Throughout his career, he has handled over 1,000 cases, including brain tumor surgeries, DSA procedures, and brain aneurysm treatments.
