A Total Knee Replacement Story: From Fear to Confidence with dr. Paulus at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri

At first, the patient never imagined that the knee pain he had been experiencing for over a year would eventually lead to such a major life decision. It began with persistent stiffness in his knee, especially after standing up from a seated position, and noticeable swelling. Initially, he thought it was just a common case of rheumatism.

“I thought it was just rheumatism, so I went to an internist. But after an X-ray was done, the results showed my bone was already misaligned and classified as grade 3,” he recalled.

The diagnosis frightened him and led him to avoid following the advice to see an orthopedic doctor. Being an avid reader, he attempted to self-diagnose and gather information on his own. He feared his symptoms might indicate rheumatoid arthritis and began analyzing everything without professional consultation.

However, his physical condition continued to deteriorate. The stiffness and swelling worsened, and a particular experience during a holiday in Yogyakarta became a wake-up call. “When I got out of the car, I felt paralyzed. It was really difficult just to step out. That’s when I decided to see a doctor,” he said.

Motivated to find treatment, he began gathering information from various sources, including a neighbor who recommended dr. Paulus at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri.

“I was looking for information and spoke to a neighbor who told me to see dr. Paulus, an expert at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri. He said the doctor was experienced in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedures,” the patient shared.

His confidence grew, especially as his worsening knee condition left him no choice but to seek treatment. “So I agreed, felt more confident too. My leg was becoming increasingly stiff and getting worse, so I had to see a doctor instead of trying to find a solution on my own,” he added.

Eventually, the patient underwent professional treatment at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri, supported by an experienced medical team. His story serves as a reminder that listening to your body and seeking the right help are crucial steps in maintaining your quality of life.

dr. Paulus’ Approach to Total Knee Replacement

When dr. Paulus first met the patient, the patient was still able to walk but reported pain in his right knee. Upon examination, dr. Paulus identified a deformity where the leg bowed inward, resembling an “O” shape.

Meanwhile, the patient’s left leg had no deformity and remained straight and healthy, causing no issues.

“The bowing was ‘O’-shaped, but not too severe—around 9 to 10 degrees. We took an X-ray and evaluated it. I initially thought it might just be damage on one side, so I considered a partial knee replacement or Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty (UKA),” dr. Paulus explained.

“But once we opened up the knee during surgery, we found extensive damage. The patellofemoral area was severely eroded, and the outer (lateral) part of the knee was also affected. So we concluded that a partial knee replacement wasn’t suitable, and a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) was necessary,” dr. Paulus said.

During the surgery, the patient remained conscious, and dr. Paulus explained that a full TKR would be required. Fortunately, recovery was relatively fast since the deformity wasn’t too severe.

The patient also shared his post-operative experience. After surgery, his knee still felt stiff, but he did not feel pain when standing. He no longer feared taking steps. “Even on the first day, there was no pain, but I still needed physical therapy and support,” he said.

About two weeks after the total knee replacement surgery, the patient was already able to walk without difficulty.
