Dr. Joy, a doctor at Mandaya Puri Hospital, broke the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) record for “Doctor Graduating the Fastest with a PhD in Medicine.” The previous record was held by Dr. Yanuar Ardani, who completed his PhD in medicine in 21 months and 19 days.

At the MURI award ceremony held on Wednesday (April 16) at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri, several prominent neurosurgeons in Indonesia were in attendance, including Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faried, PhD, Sp.BS (K), FICS, Head of the Neurosurgery Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Padjadjaran University (Unpad), and Prof. Dr. dr. Satyanegara, Sp.BS, a renowned neurosurgery professor in Indonesia. Both extended their congratulations to Dr. Joy.

Dr. Joy, who practices at Mandaya Puri Hospital, completed his PhD in brain aneurysms at the University of Helsinki, Finland, in only 18 months and 12 days. At the same university, he also pursued clinical fellowships in microsurgery and brain vascular surgery.

The University of Helsinki, the oldest university in Finland, is currently ranked number one in the country and 117th globally.

One of the reasons Dr. Joy chose Finland for his studies was the high prevalence of brain aneurysms in the country. A brain aneurysm is a bulging blood vessel in the brain that can lead to stroke or even death.

During his PhD studies in Finland, Dr. Joy had the valuable opportunity to learn directly from top neurosurgeons and was even involved in cutting-edge research on aneurysms and brain tumors.

Dr. Joy is one of the leading neurosurgeons in Indonesia in the field of brain aneurysms. He is the author of two editions of the book “Understanding Brain Aneurysms,” which has helped many patients, medical students, and healthcare professionals understand the condition. The PhD graduate from Finland is also a full-time lecturer teaching physiology and neurosurgery.

Moreover, Dr. Joy has built his own community consisting of hundreds of stroke, brain tumor, and aneurysm survivors. This community serves as a compassionate and supportive space where patients can share experiences and access accurate medical information.

In addition to his education in Finland, Dr. Joy also underwent clinical and research training in neurointervention (brain catheterization for vascular diseases) at Seoul University Hospital, South Korea.

Thanks to his extensive knowledge and experience, Dr. Joy possesses comprehensive expertise, especially in brain-related conditions. He is capable of performing microsurgery to remove brain tumors, Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) to treat blood flow blockages in the brain, as well as microsurgical clipping and coiling to manage brain aneurysms. He can also perform Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery (EETS) to remove brain tumors through the nose—without opening the skull.

Dr. Joy is known as one of the neurosurgeons who has operated on over 1,000 patients with brain tumors, aneurysms, and undergone DSA procedures.

Furthermore, Dr. Joy is a pioneer and advocate of the phenomenal Awake Brain Surgery technique, where brain surgery is performed while the patient is conscious, helping preserve motor, cognitive, and language functions. This technique eliminates the need for ICU admission post-surgery.
