Before the Procedure
Patients are typically required to fast for several hours to empty the bladder and bowels. Preoperative imaging tests, such as a CT scan or ultrasound, are performed to locate and measure the kidney stones.
RIRS is usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning the patient will be asleep during the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia may be used instead.
During the Procedure
- Insertion of Ureteroscope: The surgeon inserts a highly flexible ureteroscope through the urethra into the bladder. From there, a stent is guided into the ureter and kidney.
- Stone Removal: Once the stent is in place, the surgeon uses small instruments to break up and remove the kidney stone fragments. If the stone is too large, a laser is used to fragment it into smaller pieces.
- Stent Placement: A small plastic tube (stent) may be placed in the ureter to help drain urine from the kidney. The stent is typically removed a few weeks after the procedure.
