Minimally Invasive Kidney Stone Treatment with RIRS Laser Procedure

Mengenal RIRS, Metode Penanganan Batu Ginjal Tanpa Sayatan

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is a minimally invasive, incision-free procedure that uses laser technology to break down kidney stones. Compared to traditional kidney stone removal methods, RIRS offers many advantages, such as a faster recovery time and no need for surgical incisions.

RIRS Procedure

RIRS is a kidney stone treatment that uses a flexible ureteroscope. The procedure is relatively simple and patients usually recover quickly.

Here is the step-by-step RIRS procedure for treating kidney stones without incisions:

Before the Procedure

Patients are typically required to fast for several hours to empty the bladder and bowels. Preoperative imaging tests, such as a CT scan or ultrasound, are performed to locate and measure the kidney stones.

RIRS is usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning the patient will be asleep during the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia may be used instead.

During the Procedure

  • Insertion of Ureteroscope: The surgeon inserts a highly flexible ureteroscope through the urethra into the bladder. From there, a stent is guided into the ureter and kidney.
  • Stone Removal: Once the stent is in place, the surgeon uses small instruments to break up and remove the kidney stone fragments. If the stone is too large, a laser is used to fragment it into smaller pieces.
  • Stent Placement: A small plastic tube (stent) may be placed in the ureter to help drain urine from the kidney. The stent is typically removed a few weeks after the procedure.

After the Procedure

The RIRS procedure usually takes about 60–90 minutes. After the surgery, the patient will be monitored for several hours to ensure no complications arise.

Pain relievers and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage pain and prevent infection. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days to a week.

Benefits of RIRS for Kidney Stone Treatment

Compared to traditional kidney stone surgery, RIRS offers several benefits, including:

1. Minimal Trauma and Risk

Because RIRS is performed through the urinary tract without incisions, there are no large surgical wounds. This significantly reduces the risk of bleeding, infection, and scarring. Post-operative pain is also minimal, and recovery time is much quicker.

2. High Success Rate

With direct visualization of the kidney, surgeons can see and remove stones with high precision.
This results in a high success rate while preserving the surrounding kidney tissue.

3. Lower Risk of Complications

RIRS is associated with a lower risk of complications compared to other procedures. The minimally invasive nature of the surgery reduces the chances of bleeding, infection, and injury to nearby organs.

4. Outpatient or Short Hospital Stay

Most RIRS patients do not require a long hospital stay. Many are discharged the same day or the following day after the procedure.

5. Effective for Complex Kidney Stones

RIRS is also effective for treating large or difficult-to-reach kidney stones. The flexibility of the endoscope allows the surgeon to access nearly all parts of the urinary system, enabling complete and accurate stone removal—even in complex cases.
