What Is a Bone Marrow Transplant?
HSCT, or bone marrow transplantation, is a medical procedure to replace damaged or non-functioning stem cells with healthy ones. Stem cells are the precursors of blood cell formation and play a vital role in maintaining the immune system.
The HSCT procedure consists of five main stages, namely:
- Conditioning
- Stem cell collection
- Transplantation
- Engraftment
- Recovery
During the conditioning stage, patients undergo chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells and prepare the body to receive new stem cells.
After this stage is completed, stem cells from a donor are collected and infused into the patient’s bloodstream. These stem cells then travel to the bone marrow and begin forming new, healthy blood cells.
Engraftment refers to the process in which the new stem cells begin to settle and function in the bone marrow.
Once engraftment occurs, the patient enters the recovery phase and undergoes various supportive therapies to assist the healing process.
