Mandaya Puri ENT Center Provides BERA Test Services

Pusat THT Mandaya Puri Sediakan Pemeriksaan Tes BERA

The BERA Test (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) is a medical diagnostic procedure that evaluates brainwave activity in response to sound stimuli, such as clicking or specific tones. This test is commonly used to detect hearing disorders—especially in newborns and children—and also aids in diagnosing central nervous system abnormalities.

Benefits and Purpose of the BERA Test

The BERA test serves several important functions, including:

  • Detecting hearing loss, especially in infants and young children
  • Evaluating the function of the auditory nervous system
  • Measuring hearing ability in individuals who cannot undergo conventional hearing tests
  • Monitoring nerve activity during surgical procedures to avoid damage to the brain and auditory nerves

Understanding BERA Test Results

After the test, results are presented as graphs showing spikes in brain activity in response to specific sounds such as clicks or tones.

If the graph shows a flat line when a sound is played, it may indicate hearing loss.
Abnormal results can also suggest problems in the brain or nervous system, including:

  • Multiple sclerosis – an autoimmune disorder damaging the protective covering (myelin) around nerve cells
  • Central pontine myelinolysis – a serious condition damaging brain myelin sheaths
  • Acoustic neuroma – a benign tumor on the auditory nerve connecting the ear to the brain
  • Stroke – interruption of blood flow to the brain that may affect auditory or other nerve functions
  • Traumatic brain injury – such as from an impact or accident
  • Brain tumors – which can compress specific brain regions and impair hearing
  • Speech disorders – which may be linked to damaged auditory pathways or sound processing in the brain

If abnormal BERA test results are found, your doctor may recommend further examinations to determine the exact cause. Once identified, the appropriate treatment options will be discussed based on your specific condition.
