These could be signs of fluid accumulation inside your knee joint. To treat this condition, doctors may recommend a procedure called knee fluid aspiration, also known as joint aspiration or arthrocentesis.

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital provides knee fluid aspiration procedures, performed by highly experienced orthopedic hip & knee consultant doctors. The procedure is relatively short, and patients can usually go home on the same day.

When is knee fluid aspiration needed?

Knee fluid aspiration is usually considered when there is an excessive buildup of fluid inside the joint that causes discomfort. This condition puts pressure on the knee and limits movement.

Common signs of fluid buildup in the knee include:

  • Swelling, making the knee look larger than usual.
  • Pain, especially when walking, bending, or straightening the leg.
  • Warmth when touched, which may indicate inflammation.
  • Heaviness or stiffness in the knee, making movement difficult.

“Patients often experience swelling, pain, and warmth in the knee. One of the causes is fluid accumulation inside the joint. In such cases, fluid aspiration may be needed to reduce the pressure in the knee,” explained dr. Rahendra Pratama, Sp.OT (K) Hip & Knee from Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital.

If these symptoms persist and do not improve with rest or simple treatments, your doctor may recommend knee fluid aspiration to relieve the pressure and ease the discomfort.

What causes fluid buildup in the knee?

Fluid accumulation in the knee can result from various conditions, such as:

  • Joint infections, causing swelling, pain, and warmth.
  • Inflammation, due to arthritis or autoimmune diseases.
  • Injuries or trauma, such as falls, impacts, or sports-related accidents.

These conditions trigger excessive fluid production inside the knee, leading to discomfort and limited mobility.

How is knee fluid aspiration performed?

Knee aspiration can be performed at a doctor’s office or as an outpatient procedure in the hospital. No special preparation is needed beforehand. Upon arrival, the doctor will usually follow these steps:

  • Sterilize the skin where the needle will be inserted.
  • Apply topical anesthesia to numb the skin.
  • Identify the joint capsule to be aspirated, sometimes with the help of imaging technology (e.g., ultrasound or fluoroscopy).
  • Inject local anesthesia if necessary.
  • Insert a syringe needle into the joint space.
  • Remove as much fluid as possible, switching syringes if needed.
  • Inject medication into the joint through the same needle, if required.
  • Send the aspirated fluid to the pathology lab for analysis, if necessary.

“The fluid can vary depending on the cause — it may be joint fluid, pus, or even blood,” said dr. Rahendra. “It can usually be done at the outpatient clinic, and the patient can go home the same day. The procedure only takes about 10–15 minutes under local anesthesia.”
