How to Prevent Keloids According to dr. Rezania from Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

Ini Cara Mencegah Keloid Menurut dr. Rezania dari RS Mandaya Royal Puri

Keloids are overgrown scar tissues that develop after the skin is injured. This condition occurs when the wound healing process produces excessive collagen, causing the skin’s surface to become thickened, hardened, and raised. Keloids may form from various types of wounds—such as surgical scars, acne, piercings, or scratches—and can often cause itching, discomfort, and cosmetic concerns.

At Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, keloid-related problems are treated professionally by dr. Rezania Khairani Mochtar, Sp.B.P.R.E, a plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery specialist. She has expertise in managing different types of wounds, including preventing and treating scars that may develop into keloids. Through proper medical care, patients can achieve optimal healing results with minimal keloid risk.

How to Prevent Keloids

According to dr. Rezania, preventing keloids begins with proper wound care from the very beginning. Even minor wounds should not be underestimated, as poor treatment can lead to infection and abnormal scar formation such as keloids.

In her explanation video, dr. Rezania emphasizes the importance of early wound care:

“Never underestimate any wound, no matter how small. If not treated properly, the wound can cause infection in the surrounding and deeper tissues. Therefore, when a wound occurs, it is important to clean it under running water for about 15 minutes to ensure the wound surface is clean.”

After cleaning the wound, the next step is to keep the wound moist and clean to ensure optimal healing.

“Continue by applying an ointment or antibiotic cream to maintain moisture. Then cover the wound with sterile gauze, and make sure the dressing stays dry. Replace it regularly if it becomes wet.”

dr. Rezania also highlights the importance of monitoring the wound’s condition throughout the healing process. If the wound becomes red, swollen, or shows signs of complications, patients should promptly consult a doctor to prevent abnormal scar tissue formation.

“If a wound is not treated properly, abnormal scarring may occur, leading to raised scars or keloids that can become itchy if left untreated.”

By following these simple but essential steps, the risk of developing keloids can be significantly reduced, allowing the wound to heal faster and leaving smoother, flatter skin.

Are Keloids Dangerous?

Although they may seem harmless, keloids can cause certain complications that should be taken seriously, such as:

  • Permanent skin discoloration on the affected area, especially when exposed to sunlight frequently.
  • Persistent pain even after the keloid stops growing.
  • Reduced self-confidence or social withdrawal due to cosmetic changes caused by keloids.
