Heart Stent Placement Through the Wrist at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital by Dr. Abhirama

Pasang Ring Jantung Melalui Pergelangan Tangan di RS Mandaya Puri oleh dr. Abhirama

Advancements in medical technology now allow heart stent placement to be performed in a much more comfortable, safe, and minimally painful way. One of today’s most commonly used modern techniques is transradial stent placement—a procedure done through the wrist without the need for large incisions like in conventional methods.

This technique not only reduces the risk of complications but also speeds up recovery time. At Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, this procedure is performed by Dr. Abhirama Nofandra Putra, Sp.JP (K), a cardiovascular specialist with extensive training in interventional cardiology both in Indonesia and abroad.

Heart Stent Placement Through the Wrist According to Dr. Abhirama

In his explanation, Dr. Abhirama stated that the most common interventional cardiac procedure is performed to treat coronary artery disease.

“The most commonly performed intervention is for coronary artery disease, or what we call coronary intervention,” said Dr. Abhirama.

He explained that in most cases, access for the procedure is done through the artery in the wrist, known as the radial artery.

“For coronary intervention, in most cases we aim to go through the wrist, or what we call the radial artery,” he added.

Although certain conditions may require access through the thigh (femoral artery), Dr. Abhirama emphasized that the majority of patients can be treated through the wrist.

When asked whether this procedure leaves scars or incisions, Dr. Abhirama explained:

“If it’s done through the wrist, there’s no real incision. It’s only a very tiny mark, usually similar to a needle puncture at the access point.”

With this method, no surgical cutting or large incisions are required.

“In interventional cardiology procedures, we do not make surgical incisions,” he continued.

This technique also allows for much faster recovery.

“Recovery largely depends on the patient’s underlying condition. For elective procedures in stable patients, they can usually go home the next day,” said Dr. Abhirama.

Patients who undergo procedures through the wrist can even move right after the intervention.

“With radial access, patients can walk immediately after the procedure,” he added.

However, for emergency patients—such as those experiencing a heart attack—the recovery time will depend on the severity of their condition.

“For emergency cases like heart attacks or cardiac arrest, recovery depends heavily on the patient’s clinical course,” he explained.

Advantages of Heart Stent Placement Through the Wrist

The transradial stent placement method offers several benefits compared to conventional femoral access, including:

  • No large incisions—only a tiny puncture mark
  • Lower risk of bleeding compared to thigh access
  • Faster recovery; patients can walk hours after the procedure
  • Minimal pain and very small wound
  • Shorter hospital stay; stable patients may go home the next day

Dr. Abhirama is a cardiovascular specialist with expertise in interventional cardiology—catheter-based procedures used to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease.

He is known for his detailed and precise medical approach, prioritizing the use of modern technology—especially in treating arterial narrowing and blockages.

Dr. Abhirama completed his general medical education at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia in 2011. He then pursued cardiology specialization at the National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita – Universitas Indonesia, graduating in 2019.

To further strengthen his expertise in cardiac intervention, he underwent advanced training as an Interventional Cardiologist at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine—one of Asia’s leading cardiac training centers—in 2025.

As an interventional cardiologist, he has extensive experience performing various minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for heart and vascular conditions, including:

  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Temporary pacemaker insertion
  • Cardiac tapping
  • Coronary angiography
  • Cath Lab procedures
  • Cardiac electrophysiology
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Cardioversion
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Stent / heart stent placement
  • Comprehensive cardiac examination and consultation
  • Stress test / treadmill test

Dr. Abhirama practices at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, which is equipped with a modern Cath Lab and minimally invasive technology to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
