Doctors perform endovascular coiling to stop blood from flowing into the aneurysm. During the procedure, a long, thin catheter is inserted through an artery in the groin and carefully guided into the brain vessel affected by the aneurysm. A tiny coil is then placed inside the aneurysm sac with the help of X-ray imaging.
The coils are made of soft platinum and shaped like springs. They are extremely small and thin—ranging from about twice the width of a human hair to even thinner than a single strand. In some cases, coils are used together with stents to keep them securely in place inside the aneurysm sac.
