One in 21 men and one in 23 women worldwide are at risk of developing colorectal cancer, and more than 70% of patients are only diagnosed at stages 3 and 4. Therefore, it is important for you to know the types of tests used to detect colorectal cancer so it can be identified early and the most appropriate treatment can be provided.
Tests for Colorectal Cancer Detection
1. Colonoscopy
One of the tests used to detect colorectal cancer is a colonoscopy, which involves the use of a scope to examine the inside of the large intestine.
A colonoscopy uses a long, flexible, slender tube equipped with a camera and monitor to view the entire colon and rectum. Doctors can insert surgical instruments through the tube to take tissue samples and remove polyps.
2. Biopsy
A biopsy is a procedure to collect tissue samples for laboratory testing. In colorectal cancer cases, tissue samples are often taken during a colonoscopy. In some cases, surgery may be required to obtain a tissue sample.
In the laboratory, doctors can determine whether the cells are cancerous and assess how fast they are growing. Biopsy results help doctors understand the prognosis (the predicted outcome of a disease) and develop a treatment plan.
3. Blood Tests
Blood tests are not used to detect colorectal cancer. However, they can provide information about a patient’s overall health, such as how well the kidneys and liver are functioning. Blood tests can also detect low red blood cell levels, which may indicate bleeding caused by colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer sometimes produces a protein called carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Blood tests can track CEA levels over time and help determine whether the cancer is responding to treatment. After treatment, CEA blood tests can also help detect cancer recurrence.
4. CT Scan
Another diagnostic test for colorectal cancer is a CT scan. This test uses X-rays to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It helps determine whether colorectal cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, the liver, lungs, or other organs.
If a biopsy is recommended, a CT scan can guide the biopsy needle into the mass to obtain a tissue sample.
5. Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves and echoes to create images of internal organs. A small instrument called a transducer emits sound waves and captures echoes as they bounce off organs, which are then converted into images by a computer.
One type of ultrasound that may be recommended is an endorectal ultrasound. This test uses a special transducer inserted into the rectum to determine how far the cancer has grown through the rectal wall and whether it has reached nearby organs or lymph nodes.
6. MRI
MRI is also one of the diagnostic tests for colorectal cancer. It produces detailed images of soft tissues in the body using radio waves and strong magnetic fields. A contrast agent called gadolinium may be injected into a vein before the scan to enhance image clarity.
7. Chest X-ray
A chest X-ray may be performed once colorectal cancer has been confirmed. This test helps determine whether the cancer has spread to the lungs.
8. PET Scan
In a PET scan procedure, radioactive sugar (FDG) is injected into the bloodstream and accumulates in cancer cells. This test helps doctors determine whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body beyond the colon or rectum.
9. Septin-9 DNA Test
Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri offers an early detection method for colorectal cancer using the Septin-9 DNA test with a blood sample. This test has a sensitivity of up to 96.3% for stage 1–4 colorectal cancer.
