Blepharoplasty: Purpose, Procedure, and Side Effects

Blepharoplasty Procedure

Upper Eyelid Surgery

The procedure typically involves:

• Making an incision along the natural eyelid crease

• Removing excess skin, fat, or muscle

• Closing the incision (the scar is usually hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid)

Lower Eyelid Surgery

This procedure typically includes:

• Making an incision just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid

• Repositioning or removing fat from under-eye bags (sometimes, a small amount of skin is also removed)

• Supporting the eyelid muscles and tendons if necessary

• Closing the incision

After surgery, the plastic surgeon usually applies thin adhesive strips to support the eyelids. These strips are typically removed after one week.

The entire blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, and most patients can return home on the same day.
