Anesthesiologist: Understanding Their Roles and Responsibilities

Dokter Anestesi: Mengenal Peran dan Tanggung Jawabnya

An anesthesiologist is a doctor responsible for administering anesthesia, managing pain, and providing critical care before, during, and after surgeries or invasive procedures. In addition, anesthesiologists also evaluate, monitor, and oversee patient care before, during, and after surgery to ensure optimal patient safety.

Roles and responsibilities of an anesthesiologist

Similar to general practitioners, anesthesiologists manage all aspects of a patient’s medical condition (such as blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and heart conditions) while also administering anesthesia that prevents the patient or specific parts of the body from feeling pain during procedures.

Anesthesiologists also help ensure the patient’s safety during surgery or invasive procedures to make sure the body is well protected from injury while the patient is unaware of their surroundings.

Anesthesiologists play an important role before, during, and after surgery.

  • Before surgery: The anesthesiologist is responsible for evaluating the patient’s health and test results, assessing their fitness for surgery, and determining the safest anesthesia plan.
  • During surgery: The anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s vital signs, manages medical conditions, and provides fluids, blood products, and medications to support the function of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other vital organs.
  • After surgery: The anesthesiologist is responsible for the patient’s condition and recovery from the effects of anesthesia. They also decide when the patient has recovered enough to be discharged or transferred to a recovery room.

Anesthesiologists also play an essential role in treating patients undergoing minor procedures that do not require full unconsciousness with general anesthesia, such as mothers going through labor.

They also care for patients after major surgery in the intensive care unit (ICU). Additionally, anesthesiologists help patients experiencing severe pain from injury or chronic conditions like persistent back pain, as part of the hospital or clinic’s pain management team.

Operations and procedures that require the role of an anesthesiologist

Most surgeries and medical procedures typically require a specific type of anesthesia and the expertise of an anesthesiologist. The types of anesthesia commonly used include:

  • General anesthesia (makes the patient completely unconscious)
  • Sedation (medication to help the patient relax)
  • Regional anesthesia (numbs a larger area of the body)

If only local anesthesia is needed for minor procedures, it is usually administered directly by the medical personnel performing the procedure.

Types of surgeries that usually require general anesthesia (the patient is unconscious):

  • Head or spine surgery
  • Heart surgery
  • Lung surgery
  • Abdominal surgery

Procedures that commonly require regional anesthesia (numbing a specific body part), such as spinal, epidural, or regional blocks in the arms or legs:

  • Hip or knee surgery
  • Arm or leg surgery

Procedures that typically use intravenous sedation (relaxing the patient, possibly semi-conscious), sometimes combined with local anesthesia:

  • Bronchoscopy (airway examination)
  • Colonoscopy (large intestine examination)
  • Cystoscopy (bladder examination)
  • Dental surgery
  • Minor bone fracture repair
  • Minor skin surgeries
  • Plastic or reconstructive surgery
  • Upper GI endoscopy

Anesthesiologists also perform epidural procedures to help reduce pain during normal childbirth and provide anesthesia for C-section deliveries.
