Get to Know Acupuncture and Doctor Recommendations at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

Lebih Dekat dengan Akupunktur dan Rekomendasi Dokternya di RS Mandaya Royal Puri

Acupuncture is a treatment method that involves inserting very thin stainless steel needles into specific points on the body, including the back, neck, head, and face. The purpose of acupuncture therapy is to help alleviate certain health conditions or symptoms, such as pain.

This technique originates from traditional Chinese medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years. Numerous scientific studies have also proven its effectiveness for several health conditions. However, acupuncture is generally used as a complementary therapy. Patients may still require other medical treatments to comprehensively manage their health problems.

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital has experienced acupuncture specialists ready to provide safe and effective acupuncture treatment.

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help With?

Acupuncture may help manage various health problems. It is most commonly used to relieve chronic (long-term) pain, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Back, neck, or muscle pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Knee pain
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Sports injuries
  • Facial pain and other nerve-related disorders

In addition, acupuncture is also believed to support treatment for other health conditions, such as:

  • Cancer and side effects of cancer treatment
  • Immune system disorders
  • Infertility
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Menopause and hot flashes (sudden intense warmth, often accompanied by sweating, flushed skin, and rapid heartbeat)
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort
  • Disorders caused by repetitive movements

How Is Acupuncture Performed?

Here are the steps of a typical acupuncture procedure:

  1. Initial consultation: The acupuncturist will ask about your health condition and symptoms.
  2. Physical examination: Your body will be examined to identify specific points that will respond to acupuncture therapy.
  3. Needle insertion: Special acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the skin across various parts of the body.

Acupuncture needles are sterile, disposable, and extremely thin—similar to human hair. Depending on the therapy, needles may be inserted at different depths, ranging from shallow to a few centimeters. They may remain in place for just a few minutes or up to about 20 minutes.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

When the needles are inserted, you may feel a slight prick. However, this sensation is much milder compared to getting a vaccine injection or a blood draw.

Acupuncture needles are much thinner than standard medical needles and are solid, not hollow.

After insertion, you may experience muscle sensations such as mild soreness, tingling, heaviness, or slight numbness. Acupuncture specialists will ask you to inform them when you feel these sensations, as they usually indicate that the therapy is working.

What Happens After an Acupuncture Session?

Acupuncture provides a calming effect, so after your first session, it is recommended that someone accompanies you home. If that’s not possible, take about 5–10 minutes to rest before driving. Your therapist may also advise you to relax or avoid heavy physical activities for 1–2 days following the session.
