The hands may seem like simple parts of the body, but they play an essential role in almost every aspect of daily life. From eating and buttoning clothes to opening bottles, working, and using a phone, nearly all everyday activities require optimal hand function. When pain, stiffness, tingling, or injuries affect the hands, movements that were once easy can become challenging, limiting mobility, productivity, and even a person’s independence.

To help address these conditions, the Orthopedic Center at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri offers modern hand surgery services that combine experienced doctors’ expertise with advanced medical technology. These services include surgery using the WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet) technique, which allows patients to remain awake during procedures; minimally invasive endoscopic surgery; the use of stem cell technology in orthopedics; and microsurgery for complex injuries requiring a high degree of precision, such as replantation procedures to reattach severed fingers.
One of Mandaya’s innovations in hand surgery is the WALANT technique. With this approach, doctors do not need to use general anesthesia because surgery can be performed under local anesthesia while the patient remains awake. This technique can be used to treat various hand conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, which causes tingling and numbness, and trigger finger, which makes a finger feel stiff or locked. Doctors may even ask patients to move their hands during the procedure to assess hand function and make adjustments as needed. This approach allows doctors to evaluate the patient’s hand movements during surgery and adapt the procedure based on their observations. Since patients do not undergo general anesthesia, they may also avoid side effects such as postoperative nausea and vomiting. As a result, recovery may be faster.
In addition to WALANT, the Mandaya Orthopedic Center also performs microsurgery. This technique uses a high-magnification microscope to operate on extremely small structures in the body, such as blood vessels and nerves. One application is the surgical reattachment of fingers that have been severed due to accidents or severe injuries. During this procedure, doctors reconnect the bones, tendons, arteries, veins, and nerves. Microsurgery is essential for performing finger replantation with greater precision and helping restore blood circulation, movement, and sensation in the finger.
Mandaya’s hand surgery services also include minimally invasive surgical techniques, which allow doctors to perform procedures through smaller incisions with the help of specialized medical technology. Other modern treatment approaches are also available, including the use of stem cell technology in orthopedics and pain management procedures such as ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections to help relieve inflammation and pain in the hands and joints.
Hand surgery services at the Mandaya Orthopedic Center are provided by dr. Jecky Chandra, M.Kes, Sp.OT (K), CIPS, AIFO-K, an orthopedic and traumatology specialist with expertise in hand orthopedic surgery and microsurgery, and dr. Ameria Pribadi, Sp.OT, CF HULMS, an orthopedic specialist with a Clinical Fellowship in hand, upper limb, and microsurgery.
The development of hand surgery and microsurgery services at the Mandaya Orthopedic Center is further strengthened through collaboration, mentorship, and knowledge transfer from Prof. Katsuyasu Fukusawa, MD, a hand and microsurgery expert from Kanto Rosai Hospital, Japan. dr. Jecky Chandra has also visited Kanto Rosai Hospital to learn hand surgery techniques directly from Prof. Fukusawa. This mentorship is part of Mandaya’s efforts to bring internationally recognized hand surgery expertise and techniques to Indonesia, ultimately improving the quality of care available to patients in the country.
