Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) is a minimally invasive heart surgery technique performed through small incisions in the chest without the need to open the breastbone, unlike conventional open-heart surgery. This technique is often referred to as small-incision heart surgery because the procedure is carried out through a small opening, approximately 5 cm in length, between the ribs to access the heart.
Through the MICS approach, cardiac surgeons can treat various heart conditions while minimizing trauma to the chest area. Although performed through smaller incisions, the goal of MICS remains the same as conventional open-heart surgery, which is to repair or treat heart conditions according to the patient’s needs.
This minimally invasive heart surgery technique is considered to offer several advantages, such as less postoperative pain, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays, and relatively faster recovery times. MICS can also be used for various cardiac procedures, ranging from coronary artery bypass surgery to heart valve surgery.

Types of Heart Surgery That Can Be Performed Using the MICS Method

Several heart procedures can be performed using the MICS approach, including:
-
Heart Valve Surgery
Heart valve surgery is performed to treat heart valve diseases, such as aortic valve stenosis or aortic valve regurgitation.
In patients with these conditions, valve replacement can be performed through a small incision in the chest without fully opening the breastbone. In some cases, surgeons may also use a specialized camera to improve precision during the procedure.
The goal of this procedure is to improve blood flow from the heart, relieve symptoms, and preserve optimal heart muscle function. Because it is performed using a minimally invasive technique, the procedure may also reduce surgical trauma and help patients recover more quickly.
-
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery may be an option for selected patients with coronary artery disease, including those who require bypass grafting for one or multiple coronary arteries.
Unlike conventional bypass surgery, the MICS approach is generally performed without temporarily stopping the patient’s heartbeat.
During this procedure, surgeons make a small incision on the side of the chest to create a new pathway for blood flow around blocked coronary arteries. With this technique, blood flow to the heart muscle can be restored without opening the breastbone as in conventional bypass surgery.
What Are the Advantages of MICS Compared to Conventional Heart Surgery?

Some of the advantages of MICS compared to conventional heart surgery include:
- Faster recovery time, allowing most patients to resume daily activities within approximately 2–4 weeks
- Less postoperative pain and smaller scars
- Reduced physical and psychological trauma related to surgery
- Shorter hospital stays, typically around 3–4 days
- Better early recovery of lung function after surgery
- Lower risk of infection and bleeding
