Differences Between Pinched Nerve Symptoms and Muscle Pain: Explained by dr. Christian Ariono from Mandaya Hospital

Perbedaan Gejala Saraf Kejepit dan Sakit Otot Biasa: Penjelasan oleh dr. Christian Ariono dari RS Mandaya

Pinched nerves and muscle pain often cause similar complaints, such as pain in the back, neck, or certain parts of the body. Many people assume they are the same condition, even though their causes and treatments can be very different. Understanding the differences in symptoms early on is important to avoid choosing the wrong treatment.

dr. Christian Ariono, Sp.BS-FTB, FINSS, FINPS, FICS, a neurosurgeon at Mandaya Hospital, explains how to distinguish between pinched nerve symptoms and ordinary muscle pain so that proper treatment can be given.

What Is the Difference Between Pinched Nerve and Muscle Pain Symptoms?

Distinguishing between a pinched nerve and muscle pain is essential to determine the right treatment. One of the key differences lies in the pattern of pain experienced by the patient.

“The key sign of a pinched nerve or nerve-related pain is that the pain radiates. So the keywords are numbness, tingling, and radiating pain,” said dr. Christian Ariono.

In cases of a pinched nerve, the pain is usually not limited to one spot but spreads along the affected nerve pathway. In contrast, muscle or joint pain tends to be more localized.

“If the pain is only focused on one point, around the neck to the shoulder area, it could be a facet joint problem. If the pain can be pinpointed, especially if it hurts more when pressed, it is most likely a muscle or joint issue,” added the doctor, who specializes in arthrospine procedures.

The location of the pinched nerve also affects how the pain spreads.

“Simply put, if the nerve is pinched in the lower back, the pain usually radiates from the lower back down to the legs,” explained dr. Christian Ariono.

In the neck area, a pinched nerve can cause broader symptoms depending on which part of the nerve is affected.

“If it’s in the neck and affects a branch, the pain can radiate from the neck to the fingers. But if the compression is in the central part, it can affect areas down to the chest and even further,” he added.

From this explanation, it can be concluded that radiating pain accompanied by numbness or tingling is more indicative of a pinched nerve. Meanwhile, localized pain that worsens when pressed is more commonly associated with muscle or joint problems.
