Ovarian cysts can affect anyone, including teenagers. In many cases, the condition goes unnoticed at first until it begins to cause symptoms that interfere with daily activities. With proper treatment, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, ovarian cysts can be removed without compromising reproductive function.
One such case was experienced by Yunikeya Elvira Geraldi, a 16-year-old patient who underwent surgery with Dr. dr. Unedo Hence Markus Sihombing, Sp.OG, Subsp. Onk at Mandaya Puri Hospital.
“After the surgery, my period has been completely fine. No pain, no fainting, no dizziness—everything is normal,” said the patient.

Initial Symptoms: Severe Pain Leading to Fainting
Before being diagnosed with an ovarian cyst, the patient reported having no issues during menstruation. However, in the past few months, she began experiencing intense lower abdominal pain that came and went, often accompanied by nausea.
“For me, it started as pain and nausea. The pain felt sharp and would move around—it wasn’t just in one spot, it could shift from left to right,” she explained.
She also shared that her menstrual cycle was previously normal, but changed significantly after the symptoms appeared.
“At first, before I knew I had a cyst, my periods were normal—no cramps, no pain. But after that, the pain became so severe that I could even faint,” she added.
Following further examinations such as ultrasound and CT scan, doctors identified an enlarged ovary, which indicated the presence of an ovarian cyst.
Laparoscopic Treatment: Cyst Removed, Ovary Preserved
According to Dr. Unedo, the examination revealed a relatively large ovarian cyst, approximately the size of an orange. This condition can cause severe pain due to pressure on surrounding tissues and may lead to complications if left untreated.
“The ovary was enlarged to about the size of an orange, which we identified as an ovarian cyst. One type is serous, which is still considered benign,” explained Dr. Unedo.
To treat the condition, a laparoscopic cystectomy was performed—a minimally invasive procedure to remove the cyst. In this case, the ovary was preserved due to the patient’s young age.
“Because her reproductive function is still important, especially for a young woman, we preserved the ovary and only removed the cyst,” he added.
This technique is preferred as it involves smaller incisions and allows for faster recovery compared to conventional surgery.
Post-Surgery: Pain Resolved, Daily Activities Restored
After the procedure, the patient showed significant improvement. She reported no longer experiencing the previous symptoms, including during menstruation.
“After the surgery, my period has been completely fine. No pain, no fainting, no dizziness—everything is normal,” she said.
In addition to the positive medical outcome, she also shared her satisfaction with the services at Mandaya Puri Hospital.
“My experience at Mandaya was very positive. The nurses were very responsive—just one call and they came right away. The housekeeping was also very clean, so it felt comfortable.”
This case highlights how accurate diagnosis, experienced medical professionals, and modern laparoscopic techniques can effectively treat ovarian cysts while maintaining the patient’s quality of life—even in adolescents.
