Spinal fractures caused by bone loss (osteoporosis) can lead to serious complications, especially when accompanied by a pinched nerve. This condition not only causes severe pain in the back, lower back, and thoracic spine (mid-back), but also carries the risk of impairing mobility and reducing a patient’s quality of life. Prompt and appropriate treatment is essential to stabilize the spinal structure while relieving pressure on the affected nerves.
At Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri, Dr. Mohammad Fachry Lubis, Sp.OT-(K), an orthopedic spine consultant, performed a surgical procedure involving the placement of spinal implants combined with posterior stabilization and spinal canal decompression. The goal of this procedure is to strengthen the fractured spine while relieving nerve compression, allowing the patient to regain the ability to stand and walk more steadily after recovery.

Dr. Fachry’s Explanation of Spinal Implant Surgery and Pinched Nerve Treatment

This surgery was performed on a patient who came from outside the city with osteoporosis that had already caused a spinal fracture along with a pinched nerve. The patient experienced symptoms in multiple areas, including the thoracic spine (mid-back), lower back, and waist area. This condition resulted in severe pain and significant limitations in mobility.
According to Dr. Fachry, cases like this require comprehensive management in a single surgical procedure. “This morning we have a patient from outside the city with spinal osteoporosis that caused a spinal fracture, and it is also accompanied by a pinched nerve.”
He explained that the patient’s complaints were not limited to a single location. “The patient’s symptoms occur in several areas, including the thoracic region, as well as the back and lower back.”
To address the condition, he performed a spinal stabilization procedure using implants while also relieving the compressed nerve. The procedures performed were posterior stabilization and spinal canal decompression. Posterior stabilization aims to strengthen and maintain proper spinal alignment so the spine can regain stability, while spinal canal decompression is performed to relieve pressure on the nerves.
During the procedure, the surgery was performed using an open approach with the support of complete spinal surgery equipment and the use of C-arm imaging throughout the operation. This technology allows doctors to monitor the position of the implants in real time during surgery (intraoperative imaging), ensuring accurate and safe placement.
“Today we plan to perform surgery to stabilize the fractured spine by placing implants, as well as relieving the pinched nerve. The procedures are posterior stabilization and spinal canal decompression.”
With this treatment, the patient’s spinal structure is expected to become stable again while the pressure on the nerves is relieved. After surgery, the patient is expected to undergo gradual recovery, eventually being able to stand and walk more comfortably. Proper management of spinal fractures accompanied by nerve compression is crucial to prevent long-term complications and restore the patient’s quality of life.
