Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. According to Prof. dr. Chaidir Arif Mochtar, Sp.U(K), PhD, a urology specialist from Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital, this cancer occurs due to abnormal growth or mutation of cells within the prostate gland that eventually become malignant.
This condition is a major concern because it is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among men globally, including in Indonesia.
Based on data from Globocan (WHO – IARC), prostate cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer in the world and the fifth most frequent cancer in men in Indonesia. Therefore, it is important for men to understand the factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Causes of Prostate Cancer in Men to Watch Out For
Here are the main causes and risk factors for prostate cancer as explained by Prof. Chaidir:
1. Age
The risk of prostate cancer increases with age. As men grow older, prostate cells are more likely to undergo changes or mutations that can trigger cancer. Although aging cannot be prevented, being aware of this risk helps encourage early detection and timely treatment.
2. Genetic Factors
Certain genetic mutations—such as BRCA2 and ATM—have been linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer. Today, genetic testing can identify whether a person carries genes that predispose them to this condition.
3. Race or Ethnicity
Prof. Chaidir explains that in the United States, African-American men have the highest risk of prostate cancer, followed by Caucasians, Hispanics, and Pacific Islanders, while Asians show the lowest incidence rates. These differences are believed to be influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors.
4. Metabolic Syndrome
Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and other metabolic disorders can increase prostate cancer risk. These issues may affect hormonal balance and cause chronic inflammation in the body, contributing to abnormal cell growth in the prostate.
5. Obesity
Research shows that obesity is another significant risk factor. Excess body weight can trigger hormonal imbalances and chronic inflammation, which may promote the development of cancer cells in the prostate gland.
6. Smoking Habits
According to Prof. Chaidir, smoking is one of the most dangerous single factors in many types of cancer, including prostate cancer. The toxic chemicals in cigarettes can damage cell DNA and cause mutations that lead to cancer.
7. Unhealthy Diet
Frequent consumption of red meat, fried or grilled foods (barbecue), and alcohol has been associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. The charring process in grilled meats produces carcinogenic compounds that may alter prostate cells. While occasional consumption is acceptable, Prof. Chaidir advises against making it a habit.
8. Sexual Behavior
The link between sexual behavior and prostate cancer remains controversial. Some studies suggest that age at marriage and ejaculation frequency might influence risk, but scientific evidence is not yet strong enough to establish definitive conclusions.
Prostate Cancer Treatment at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital: Advanced and Comprehensive Care

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital features an Integrated Prostate Cancer Center, designed to provide comprehensive care for patients—from early detection and PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing to robotic-guided prostate biopsy for accurate diagnosis.
With this integrated approach, patients can undergo all stages of prostate cancer examination and treatment in one modern, fully equipped facility.
Advanced treatment options are also available, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and Lutetium-177 nuclear therapy.
Lutetium-177 therapy targets PSMA (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) receptors found on prostate cancer cells, destroying them precisely without harming surrounding healthy tissue. This targeted approach enhances treatment effectiveness while minimizing side effects.
The cancer center is also equipped with Elekta Versa HD 4D radiotherapy technology, which allows tumor destruction with extremely high precision. This ensures that treatment is delivered accurately to the intended area, improving clinical outcomes and overall effectiveness.
