A 38-Year-Old Patient with an 8 cm Brain Tumor Undergoes Successful Surgery with Dr. Joy at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital

Pengalaman Pasien Tumor Otak 8 Cm Jalani Operasi di RS Mandaya Royal Puri Bersama Dr. Joy

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain tissue that can press on surrounding areas, disrupt nerve function, and cause various symptoms. Patients with brain tumors often experience persistent headaches, vision problems, severe nausea and vomiting, balance disturbances, and even loss of consciousness in more advanced cases.

This is the story of a 38-year-old woman from Jakarta who bravely battled an 8 cm tumor located in her cerebellum (the lower back part of the brain). After undergoing an MRI scan, doctors found a large tumor in the posterior fossa area that was compressing almost the entire cerebellum. This condition caused severe symptoms such as chronic headaches, uncontrollable vomiting, and frequent loss of balance while walking.

Early Symptoms and Diagnosis

Before being diagnosed, the patient often experienced worsening headaches and relied on painkillers almost daily. Initially, the symptoms seemed minor—blurry vision and pain at the back of the head when coughing, laughing, or straining. Assuming it was due to fatigue or prolonged screen time, she postponed seeking medical attention.

However, by May 2025, her condition deteriorated significantly. She began to fall frequently, vomited intensely without apparent cause, and suffered unbearable headaches. An MRI scan revealed a brain tumor measuring approximately 8 x 5 x 5 cm, occupying more than 90% of the right cerebellum and pressing against the brainstem. The patient was then referred to Dr. dr. Mardjono Tjahjadi, Sp.BS, Subsp. N-Vas, F. N-Onk, PhD, FICS, IFAANS, widely known as Dr. Joy, for brain tumor surgery at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital.

Surgical Explanation and Procedure by Dr. Joy

According to Dr. Joy, the tumor belonged to the category of large posterior fossa tumors, which carry the risk of disturbing cerebrospinal fluid flow and causing hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain)—a potentially life-threatening condition if not treated promptly. Therefore, the Mandaya Royal Puri medical team recommended immediate surgical intervention.

The surgery was performed in two stages within a single session. The first stage involved the installation of a special shunt to drain the blocked brain fluid, followed by the second stage to remove the tumor directly. With Dr. Joy’s expertise and the support of advanced neurosurgical technology at Mandaya, more than 95% of the tumor tissue was successfully removed without any major complications.

Post-Surgery Recovery: Significant Improvement

Following the operation, the patient showed remarkable recovery. Her previously blurred vision became clear again, the chronic headaches she had endured for years completely disappeared, and she was able to walk normally shortly after undergoing light physiotherapy. She even joked that she now gives her leftover painkillers to her friends because she no longer needs them.

Postoperative MRI scans confirmed that the tumor was almost completely removed, with both radiological and clinical results showing excellent outcomes. The patient expressed her gratitude, saying she believed that “God worked through the hands of Dr. Joy.”
