Traditional tonsillectomy or tonsil removal surgery usually requires a relatively long time, often more than 45 minutes. Patients also commonly experience significant pain after the procedure, followed by a longer recovery period.
Today, a modern innovation called plasma coblation is available. This technology reduces tonsillectomy duration to only 10–15 minutes. It works by using radiofrequency energy through saline solution, generating plasma that breaks down tissue with high precision, minimal bleeding, and reduced trauma to surrounding tissue.
Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital has adopted this advanced method, performed directly by dr. Abdillah Hasbi Assadyk, Sp.THT-KL, an experienced ENT specialist. With this approach, patients benefit from a faster procedure and a more comfortable recovery with minimal post-operative pain.

How Plasma Coblation Works
During the procedure, the doctor uses a special instrument that delivers radiofrequency energy into saline solution. This process creates plasma, an energy field capable of breaking down tissue with very high precision.
Unlike conventional methods that use heat to burn tissue, coblation does not burn or char tissue. As a result, healing is faster and the risk of inflammation is significantly lower.
“This procedure is performed for enlarged tonsils due to recurrent tonsillitis, as well as for adenoid enlargement. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can narrow the airway, which may disrupt sleep or even stop breathing completely,” explained dr. Abdillah.
“Because it is caused by obstruction of the tonsils and adenoids, we also call this condition obstructive sleep apnea. With this new technology, which we call plasma coblation, we can treat it more effectively,” he added.
According to dr. Abdillah, this technology works at relatively low temperatures compared to similar methods, minimizing the risk of tissue damage:
“Post-operative recovery for tonsillectomy patients can be faster, and with plasma coblation the procedure itself is reduced to just 10–15 minutes.”
Advantages of Plasma Coblation for Tonsillitis
Compared to conventional methods, plasma coblation offers several benefits in tonsillectomy procedures, including:
- High precision in removing tonsil tissue without damaging surrounding healthy tissue
- Less bleeding, since blood vessels are effectively sealed
- Minimal heat injury, thanks to lower operating temperatures
- Reduced tissue trauma, allowing faster healing
- Shorter recovery time, enabling patients to eat, drink, and talk sooner
- Milder post-operative pain, reducing the need for pain medication
- Lower risk of complications, both in children and adults
Plasma Coblation Procedure Steps
The tonsillectomy process using plasma coblation generally involves:
- Anesthesia: Usually performed under general anesthesia so patients feel no pain.
- Duration: Around 15–45 minutes, depending on the patient’s condition and treatment area.
- Technique: The doctor uses a coblation wand to remove or reduce the targeted tissue with high precision, without damaging healthy tissue.
With its high precision, the procedure becomes more efficient and causes minimal tissue trauma. However, recovery time still varies for each patient depending on age, health condition, and severity of the illness.
