Mandaya ENT Center Launches Plasma Coblation to Treat Tonsillitis

Pusat THT Mandaya Luncurkan Plasma Coblation untuk Atasi Radang Amandel

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsil glands, often marked by symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. This condition can affect both children and adults. When tonsillitis becomes recurrent, it can significantly disrupt daily activities and reduce quality of life.

Traditionally, treatment for tonsillitis involves medications such as antibiotics or surgical removal of the tonsils. While effective, conventional tonsil surgery often causes significant postoperative pain and requires a longer recovery period.

Now, a more advanced and minimally invasive therapy is available: plasma coblation. This technology is offered at Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital and performed by dr. Abdillah Hasbi Assadyk, Sp.THT-KL, an experienced ENT specialist who completed advanced training in Italy. With this method, procedures become more precise, less painful, and recovery time is faster.

What is Plasma Coblation?

In ENT procedures with plasma coblation, doctors use a special device that delivers radiofrequency energy into saline solution. This process generates plasma, an energy field that breaks down tissue with microscopic precision.

Unlike traditional surgery that uses high heat and burns tissue, plasma coblation operates at a much lower temperature. As a result, tissues are not burned or charred, reducing inflammation and speeding up healing.

According to Dr. Abdillah, plasma coblation is not only for recurrent tonsillitis but can also be applied to enlarged adenoids, which often block airways and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.

“This procedure is performed for enlarged tonsils due to recurrent tonsillitis, as well as adenoids. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can narrow the airway, disturbing sleep and even causing episodes of stopped breathing. Since these blockages are caused by tonsils and adenoids, we call it obstructive sleep apnea. With plasma coblation, we now have a new technology to address this condition,” explains Dr. Abdillah.

Recovery after plasma coblation is faster, and the procedure itself takes only about 10–15 minutes.

Advantages of Plasma Coblation for Tonsillitis

Compared to conventional methods, plasma coblation offers multiple benefits:

  • High precision: Removes tonsil tissue accurately without damaging healthy tissue.
  • Reduced bleeding risk: Blood vessels are sealed more effectively.
  • Minimal thermal injury: Uses low temperatures, causing less tissue damage.
  • Less tissue trauma: Smaller wounds lead to faster healing and preserved natural function.
  • Shorter recovery time: Patients can return to eating, drinking, and speaking more quickly.
  • Less postoperative pain: Reduced inflammation means fewer pain medications are needed.
  • Safer procedure: Suitable for both children and adults, with a lower risk of complications.

What to Expect During Plasma Coblation?

  • Anesthesia: Usually performed under general anesthesia so patients feel no pain.
  • Procedure duration: About 15–45 minutes, depending on condition and treatment area.
  • Surgical technique: Doctors use a special coblation wand to remove or shrink targeted tissue with high precision, without harming surrounding healthy tissue.

With precise control, plasma coblation ensures shorter operating time and minimal tissue trauma. However, recovery results may vary depending on age, health condition, and severity.
