A hernia is a condition in which an internal organ, such as the intestines or fatty tissue, protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the muscles or surrounding tissue. In many cases, hernias involve abdominal organs pushing through the abdominal wall. While often associated with adults, babies can also develop hernias.
In infants, hernias must be treated promptly to prevent serious complications.

Types of Hernia in Babies That Are Commonly Seen
The two most common types of hernia in babies are inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia. Each has distinct characteristics.
1. Inguinal Hernia
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine or fatty tissue from the abdomen protrudes through a weak area of the muscle around the inguinal canal (groin fold). This type is the most frequent hernia in infants, especially in boys.
Characteristics of inguinal hernia in babies:
- A bulge in the groin or scrotum, more visible when the baby cries, coughs, or strains.
- The bulge usually shrinks or disappears when the baby is lying down.
- May cause discomfort, pain, or a heavy sensation in the area.
2. Umbilical Hernia
An umbilical hernia happens when part of the intestine or abdominal tissue pushes through a weak spot around the belly button (umbilicus). It usually appears as a soft bulge at the navel, more noticeable when the baby cries or strains.
Characteristics of umbilical hernia in babies:
- A soft bulge or swelling at the belly button.
- More obvious when the baby cries, coughs, or strains.
- The bulge may shrink or disappear when the baby is calm or lying down.
- Typically painless, so the baby still looks comfortable.
- The skin around the navel appears to push outward.
- In some cases, the bulge may increase in size as the baby grows.
Treatment Options for Hernia in Babies
Surgery is the primary treatment for hernias. There are two main surgical approaches for infants:
1. Open Surgery
The surgeon makes an incision at the hernia site to push the protruding organ or tissue back into place inside the abdomen.
2. Laparoscopic Surgery (Keyhole Surgery)
A minimally invasive technique that uses several small incisions. Through these openings, special instruments are inserted to repair the hernia. This method is considered more modern, offers better cosmetic results, and requires advanced surgical skills.
