Indonesia’s First CORI Robotic-Assisted UKA Surgery Performed by Dr. Paulus
The country’s first CORI robotic-assisted UKA surgery was performed by orthopedic specialist in hip & knee, Dr. Paulus Ronald Hibono, Sp.OT (K) Hip & Knee, from Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital.
The procedure was conducted on a patient with grade 4 knee osteoarthritis, where the femur and shin bones were grinding against each other due to the complete loss of cartilage. This condition caused severe pain, especially while walking, making surgery the most viable treatment option.
In this case, only the severely damaged inner part of the knee was replaced. Using advanced robotic technology, the surgeon could work with extreme precision. With the help of computer guidance, the exact size and depth of bone to be removed could be measured accurately, and the final surgical outcome could be visually simulated before the operation began.
The process started by activating the robot and guiding the robotic burr to the pre-planned surgical area. This intelligent robotic surgical tool only cuts according to the surgical plan. If it approaches an unplanned bone area, the burr automatically stops spinning, reducing the risk of unnecessary tissue damage. This technology ensures safer procedures and better results.
Once the bone preparation was complete, Dr. Paulus inserted the implant, resurfaced the joint, and added a cushion to replace the lost cartilage. This technique results in a smaller incision, less postoperative pain, and faster recovery.
