Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital Achieves 1,000 Knee Surgeries, Leading Robotic Technology in Indonesia

RS Mandaya Berhasil Operasi 100 Lutut Dengan Robot Navigasi CORI

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital has reached a significant milestone, successfully performing 1,000 knee surgery procedures, including operations utilizing advanced robotic technology. This achievement played a key role in the hospital’s designation by global medical technology company Smith+Nephew as the first and only CORI Robotic Knee Reference Center in Indonesia.

The CORI Robotic Surgical System is a cutting-edge navigation technology designed to assist orthopedic surgeons in performing knee replacement procedures with greater precision. Using real-time 3D mapping, the system allows surgeons to tailor knee implants to match each patient’s unique anatomy.

To mark the inauguration, Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital held a ceremonial event on Saturday (August 9), featuring a health talk and panel discussion titled “Differences Between Conventional Knee Replacement and Robotic-Assisted Surgery.” The event was attended by the hospital’s internationally certified Hip & Knee orthopedic specialists: Dr. Paulus Ronald Hibono, Sp.OT(K) Hip & Knee, Dr. William Chandra, Sp.OT(K) Hip & Knee, Dr. Rahendra Pratama, Sp.OT(K) Hip & Knee, and Dr. Ardi Setiawan, Sp.OT(K) Hip & Knee. Special guest speaker Associate Professor Pruk Chaiyakit, MD—a highly experienced hip and knee orthopedic surgeon from Thailand—also participated.

Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital was deemed an ideal referral center for CORI Robotic Knee Surgery due to its world-class surgical and rehabilitation facilities, combined with its team of internationally certified Hip & Knee subspecialists.

The team’s expertise is proven through their participation in global forums, such as Dr. Paulus representing Indonesia at the CORI Robotic Summit in Germany and training at the CORI Robotic Workshop in Thailand, as well as Dr. William’s advanced knee surgery training at the Lyon School of Knee Surgery in France.

Currently, Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital holds the record for the highest number of CORI robotic knee replacement procedures in Indonesia, having performed 100 robotic-assisted knee surgeries in just 10 months.

“Mandaya has successfully performed 100 robotic knee surgeries within 10 months and became the first to perform partial knee replacement (UKA) using robotic assistance,” said Erwin Suyanto, Public Relations at Mandaya Hospital Group.

“Some patients not only walk again but even return to intense sports such as tennis,” he added.

Understanding the CORI Robotic Surgical System and OXINIUM Implants

The CORI Robotic Surgical System is an advanced navigation-assisted technology for both partial knee replacement (UKA/Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty) and total knee replacement (TKR). It enables surgeons to map the patient’s knee anatomy in real time, eliminating the need for pre-operative CT scans.

Clinically proven for over 20 years and used in more than 120 countries, CORI is equipped with a “smart surgical burr” that helps surgeons make highly precise bone cuts and accurately position implants to match the patient’s anatomy. This leads to more accurate outcomes, faster recovery times, and better long-term results.

CORI is also the only robotic knee surgery system approved by the U.S. FDA for revision knee replacement—procedures that replace part or all of a worn-out implant with a new one.

A unique advantage of CORI is its compatibility with OXINIUM knee implants from Smith+Nephew, renowned for their durability of up to 30 years. Made from zirconium metal that undergoes a special oxidation process, OXINIUM offers nine times the structural strength after 45 million steps—equivalent to 30 years of use. After 10 million cycles of impact testing, its surface remains 160 times smoother than standard knee implants, dramatically reducing wear and post-surgery discomfort.

With high biocompatibility, OXINIUM implants minimize the risk of allergic reactions and are specifically designed to fit Asian knee anatomy.

By combining the precision of CORI robotic technology with the unmatched durability of OXINIUM implants, Mandaya Royal Puri Hospital offers patients faster recovery, longer-lasting results, and a dramatically improved quality of life after knee surgery.
