Miracles on the Operating Table: RS Mandaya’s “Awake Brain Surgery: Where Miracles Begin” Highlights the Life-Saving Struggles of Brain Tumor Patients

Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri proudly presents a medical documentary titled “Awake Brain Surgery: Where Miracles Begin”, showcasing the life-changing journeys of brain tumor patients undergoing complex procedures guided by a multidisciplinary team and cutting-edge medical technology. The premiere screening took place at Cinema XXI Lippo Mall Puri on Saturday (July 26).

The documentary follows the story of Dr. dr. Mardjono Tjahjadi, Sp.BS, Subsp. N-Vas, F. N-Onk, PhD, FICS, IFAANS—known as Dr. Joy—an Indonesian neurosurgeon with internationally recognized expertise and dedication. Through two primary cases and several other glimpses, the film captures real-life miracles that unfold on the operating table.

One of the most moving stories features 6-year-old Ryu, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor measuring 5x5x5 cm, occupying nearly 70% of the posterior fossa—an area critical to basic life functions. In a 2-hour microsurgical procedure, Dr. Joy successfully removed the tumor. Just hours after surgery, Ryu was able to stand and eat normally, demonstrating a remarkable and swift recovery.

Another powerful story highlights Pak Robby, an adult patient who had been battling epilepsy for 16 years due to a brain tumor in the frontal region. He underwent an awake brain surgery procedure, where the patient remains conscious during surgery to preserve critical functions such as speech, memory, and motor skills. Despite the extreme precision required, Pak Robby was able to speak and regain mobility post-surgery—a significant turning point in his life.

These stories powerfully reflect how healing is not solely dependent on surgical skills but also on human-centered, collaborative approaches. The film portrays the synergy between doctors across specialties—including neurosurgery, neurology, and anesthesiology—working together to ensure the success of each operation.

“Through this documentary, we hope the public realizes that medical technology and the expertise of Indonesian doctors have progressed significantly, even for treating complex brain conditions. This growing trust in local healthcare is what we aim to strengthen,” said Erwin Suyanto, Public Relations at Mandaya Hospital Group.

Advanced Neurosurgical Facilities Supporting Surgical Success

“Awake Brain Surgery: Where Miracles Begin” also highlights advanced neurosurgical facilities that support the successful removal of brain tumors. Among them is Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM), a sophisticated tool that monitors the nervous system in real-time during surgery to prevent nerve damage.

RS Mandaya Royal Puri is equipped with a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge technologies that play a vital role in supporting complex brain surgeries. These include:

  • Digital PET CT Scan
  • IQon Spectral CT Scan
  • LINAC ELEKTA VERSA HD Radiotherapy
  • MRI Ingenia Ambition X

Beyond the clinical side, “Awake Brain Surgery: Where Miracles Begin” touches deeply on emotional and spiritual dimensions. Through heartfelt testimonials from patients, families, and fellow physicians, viewers are invited into the inner experiences of those fighting for their lives. Dr. Joy appears not only as a master surgeon but also as a beacon of hope, bringing calm and courage during moments of profound fear.

The film also chronicles Dr. Joy’s academic journey, completing his PhD in medicine in just 18 months and 12 days in Helsinki, Finland—a record-breaking achievement recognized by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI). In Finland, he studied under world-renowned neurosurgeon Prof. Juha Hernesniemi, who instilled the philosophy that every millimeter of brain tissue is life that must be protected.

The film concludes with Dr. Joy’s reflections on the deeper meaning of his profession. He shares that the knowledge and skill he possesses are divine gifts, entrusted to him to benefit humanity as fully as possible.

Through this documentary, RS Mandaya Royal Puri aims to inspire the public about the vital role of empathy, collaboration, and innovation in medicine—showcasing that miracles don’t only happen through advanced tools, but also through sincerity, compassion, and the courage to touch lives.

“This film represents our commitment to educating the public about the importance of technology, medical teamwork, and humanity in every medical act,” concluded Erwin.
