Successful Mastectomy and Reconstruction by Mandaya Puri’s Medical Team
The breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri were performed by Dr. Enos H. Siburian, Sp.B (K) Onk, an oncologic surgeon, and Dr. Sara Ester Triatmoko, Sp.B.P.R.E., Subsp.M.O. (K), a plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeon.
Before the mastectomy, the patient underwent four cycles of chemotherapy, which successfully reduced the tumor size from 5.79 cm to 2.5 cm.
Following the tumor size reduction, Dr. Enos performed a Modified Radical Mastectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the entire breast, including the nipple, areola, and some lymph nodes in the armpit.
Once the tumor was successfully removed, Dr. Sara took over to reconstruct a new breast for the patient.
“My job is to create a new breast. Today, I will take muscle from the back along with its blood vessels, rotate it to the front, and shape it to match the other breast,” explained Dr. Sara.
“After surgery, the patient will feel like they still have a breast, pain will be reduced, and healing will be much faster,” she added.
About two weeks after surgery, the patient can resume chemotherapy or radiation therapy. As for the shape of the new breast, it will begin to naturally settle and resemble the other breast in about six weeks.
“So, for women diagnosed with breast cancer, don’t worry. When the cancer is removed, you won’t lose your breast — a new one will be reconstructed,” Dr. Sara assured.
The entire procedure — both mastectomy and reconstruction — took about four hours.
