Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri offers five types of liver cancer therapy tailored to the needs and conditions of each patient. These include Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), Microwave Ablation (MWA), Liver Resection, Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE), and Chemotherapy. The specialist doctors at the Mandaya Liver Center will determine the most appropriate therapy for each patient.
Types of Liver Cancer Therapy at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri
Here are the types of liver cancer therapies available at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri:
1. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a type of ablation that uses radiofrequency waves to generate heat via a needle inserted directly into the tumor.
These waves trigger ion vibrations in the tumor tissue, producing heat between 60–100 degrees Celsius. This heat is sufficient to destroy cancer cells, effectively killing the tumor.
2. Microwave Ablation (MWA)
Just like RFA, Microwave Ablation (MWA) is an ablation technique for liver cancer. MWA uses microwave energy to heat the tumor tissue.
Microwaves in MWA produce high-frequency heat that is stronger than RFA, allowing physicians to treat a wider area of the tumor in a shorter time.
MWA is considered more efficient and is suitable for larger tumors or nodules located in hard-to-reach areas.
3. Liver Resection
Liver Resection is a surgical procedure to remove part of the liver. This is typically done to treat liver cancer, benign tumors, or liver damage from other diseases such as cirrhosis.
The goal of this liver cancer therapy is to remove the affected part of the liver while preserving healthy liver function.
4. Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)
Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) is a liver cancer treatment, especially for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). TACE is performed by injecting chemotherapy drugs directly into the blood vessels feeding the tumor.
The goal is to reduce the tumor’s blood supply, slow its growth, and minimize side effects on the rest of the patient’s body.
5. Chemotherapy
Another liver cancer therapy available at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. For liver cancer, the drugs are usually delivered directly into the blood vessels feeding the cancer. The goal is to stop the cancer’s growth (chemoembolization).
