Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in men, particularly those aged 50 and above. One of the treatment options recommended by doctors for this condition is Rezum Water Vapor Therapy. If you are considering this procedure, here is everything you need to know about its preparation and the complete process.

Preparation for the Rezum Procedure
Rezum water vapor therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses natural energy in steam to eliminate excess prostate tissue pressing on the urethra.
Before the procedure, several preparatory steps need to be taken, including:
1. Pre-procedure Tests
Certain tests are required before the doctor approves the Rezum procedure for a patient.
-
Prostate Ultrasound
A prostate ultrasound is performed to assess the size and condition of the prostate. If the prostate is too large or swollen, the Rezum procedure cannot be performed.
-
PSA Test
The doctor will also check PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels. If the PSA level is above 7, the patient may be required to undergo a biopsy, as an elevated PSA level can indicate prostate cancer. Rezum is only performed for benign prostate tumors.
-
Biopsy
A biopsy is only conducted if PSA levels are elevated to determine whether the tissue is benign or malignant (cancerous).
2. Preparation Before the Procedure
- If the patient is taking blood thinners, the doctor may advise stopping them about a week before the procedure.
- Patients may be prescribed antibiotics to take the night before the Rezum therapy.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often recommended the day before and after the procedure to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- On the day of the procedure, patients are encouraged to eat a light meal and drink plenty of fluids while avoiding alcohol and caffeine, as they can interfere with the Rezum procedure.
During the Rezum Procedure
Once all preparations are completed, the doctor will begin the procedure. An anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia to ensure the patient does not feel pain.
Here is what happens during the Rezum procedure:
- A urologist inserts a long, thin-tipped handheld device into the urethra.
- A small needle is released from the tip of the device to deliver steam into the enlarged prostate area.
- The steam destroys prostate cells, causing the enlarged area to shrink.
The Rezum water vapor therapy procedure typically takes about 30 minutes. After the procedure, the patient will need to use a urinary catheter for a few days until the swelling subsides.
Post-Rezum Procedure Care
After undergoing the Rezum procedure, patients should follow these steps to ensure a smooth recovery:
1. Rest
The body needs time to recover after Rezum therapy. Patients are advised to rest at home for at least one day after the procedure. Avoid strenuous activities such as heavy lifting or cycling for several weeks.
2. Avoid Sexual Activity
Refrain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for a few days to allow the treated area to heal properly.
- Drink Plenty of Fluids
Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, particularly water, to help flush blood out of the urine.
- Avoid Bladder-Irritating Beverages
Avoid drinks that may irritate the bladder, such as caffeine (tea, coffee, energy drinks), carbonated beverages (soda), and citrus juices.
When to See a Doctor After the Rezum Procedure
Doctors usually schedule a follow-up appointment 2–3 weeks after the Rezum procedure to monitor the patient’s recovery.
However, patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience:
- Inability to urinate
- Severe pain
- Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
- Chills
- Diarrhea
