In Indonesia, full body MRI scan is one of the latest examination techniques, utilizing cutting-edge technology. While regular MRI generally targets specific areas of the body, the full body MRI scan targets areas from head to toe. When should this procedure be performed?

What is a Full Body MRI Scan?
A full body MRI scan also known as a whole body MRI, is a scanning procedure using magnetic waves to obtain images of the entire body or specific parts of the body in one scan.
This scan differs from a regular MRI, which targets specific areas such as the spine, breasts, brain, or liver.
The full body scan can cover the entire body or broader parts of the body. A full body MRI scan can include:
- Whole body scan, from head to toe, including the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and thighs. This scan does not include arms and legs.
- Head and torso. This examination is similar to the whole body scan but is quicker as it doesn’t include a specific spine scan.
- Torso. The fastest scan within the MRI full body scan, covering the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.
Purpose of Full Body MRI Scan
The main purpose of performing a full body MRI scan is for early detection of cancer and abnormal mass growth within the body. Early cancer detection allows for earlier treatment, improving the chances of recovery.
Additionally, a full body MRI scan is also useful in monitoring cancer cell progression and evaluating the treatment given.
Anyone can undergo a full body MRI scan for early cancer detection. However, this examination is more recommended for:
- Individuals at high risk of developing cancer
- Those with genetic mutations that cause cancer
- Cancer patients, such as those with multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, and melanoma
- People over the age of 18
You may also opt for this examination if you’ve undergone various tests but still haven’t found the cause of the symptoms you’re experiencing.
Procedure
The full body MRI scan procedure is generally similar to other targeted MRI scans. However, you will need to fast for at least four hours before the examination.
Like a regular MRI, you will be asked to wear a special gown and remove all metal accessories on your body.
Next, you will lie on the scanner table. The technician will then place radiofrequency coils from head to toe. These coils are used to send and receive frequency waves during the scan.
Once everything is set, the technician will also offer earplugs to dampen the noise generated by the scanning device. After everything is ready, the table will be moved into the scanner.
During the scan, you will be able to communicate with the technician, who will be in another room. The procedure usually takes under 1 hour.
Advantages
There are several advantages to a full body MRI scan, including:
- Helps in the early detection of cancer in individuals at high risk
- Shorter examination time compared to regular MRI, typically under 1 hour
- Uses artificial intelligence assistance to produce better images
- Uses music to help alleviate stress, anxiety, and pain
- Does not require contrast agents, reducing the risk of allergic reactions
Risks
The full body MRI scan uses radio magnet waves, which do not produce radiation exposure. Additionally, since the procedure does not use contrast agents, there is no potential for allergic reactions.
For this reason, the procedure is generally safe. However, people with implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers, may not be able to undergo this examination because the strong magnetic field can interfere with the devices.
Moreover, this examination is more recommended for people at high risk of developing cancer, as the benefits far outweigh the risks.
In Indonesia, Mandaya Royal Hospital is the first hospital to have the full body MRI scan equipment.
To find out if you are a suitable candidate for this examination, you can consult with a doctor or visit the Preventive Health Care at Mandaya Royal Puri. Make an appointment via WhatsApp Chat, Book Appointment, or download the Care Dokter app on Google Play and the App Store.
