Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or non-cancerous prostate enlargement, is a common condition affecting elderly men. Symptoms such as weak urine flow and frequent nighttime urination can significantly disrupt quality of life. This was the case for a 77-year-old patient who began experiencing prostate issues again, despite having undergone surgery in the past.
To address his recurring symptoms, the patient consulted dr. Maruto Harjanggi, BSc(Hons), Sp.U, FICS, a urology specialist at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri, who recommended the Rezum procedure. The outcome was outstanding—exceeding expectations.

Patient Complaints: Weak Urine Flow and Frequent Nighttime Urination
Although the patient had previously undergone surgery for prostate enlargement, his symptoms recently returned.
“It came back. My urination became weak again, and I had to wake up 2–3 times a night. I couldn’t sleep well, I lost weight. My relative, who’s a doctor in Tangerang, recommended Rezum as a safer option for elderly patients. That’s why we came to Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri to meet dr. Maruto,” said the patient.
Following the family doctor’s recommendation, the patient opted for the Rezum procedure—a modern, safer alternative for elderly patients. He underwent the procedure at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri with dr. Maruto.
The Rezum procedure was performed on April 16, 2025. Three months later, on July 15, the patient returned for a follow-up to check his prostate size. The results were remarkable—his prostate had shrunk from 140 cc to 67 cc, thanks to the Rezum technology at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri.
Dr. Maruto’s Explanation of the Patient’s Condition
The patient’s prostate was considerably enlarged at 140 cc, based on a CT scan conducted in Malang. This size exceeds the typical indication for Rezum, which is usually between 40–80 cc. However, after careful medical evaluation and consultation, the procedure was still carried out—with excellent results.
“This patient had a significantly enlarged prostate, beyond standard Rezum indications. But after thorough discussion with dr. Maruto, he agreed to proceed. The result was beyond expectations,” the team explained.
Three months post-surgery, the patient’s prostate size had drastically reduced to 67 cc, and urine flow improved greatly.
The evaluation showed a maximum urine flow of 290 ml/sec, and urination took only 14 seconds to release nearly 200 cc—an exceptional result for a 77-year-old man, who typically would need 1–2 minutes to urinate.
Following the procedure, the patient used a catheter for 1 week due to minor bleeding, but he reported no pain during insertion or removal. The entire recovery process was safe and comfortable, thanks to the minimally invasive Rezum technology.
Rezum technology uses steam therapy to reduce prostate tissue without open surgery. It’s a minimally invasive method, ideal for older adults, with a relatively quick recovery time.
This successful outcome proves that Rezum can be an effective solution even for severe prostate enlargement in elderly patients—provided it is handled with proper evaluation and by experienced urologists.
